Job Description

Position: Landscaper Supervisor

Department: Facilities

Keeps the grounds and outside areas ― including lawn areas and parking lots ― clean and free of debris. This is the fourth in a series of four (4) classifications. Incumbents supervise others, possess and work at a high level of expertise, exercise judgment and independence in performance of duties, and instruct others.

Duties and Responsibilities (specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to):

  • Supervises and develops direct reports by mentoring, coaching, and providing performance feedback; works collaboratively with them to design professional development plans that support their continuous learning.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing levels; schedules staff to ensure an adequate number are available to accomplish scheduled activities; establishes daily and weekly priorities.
  • Maintains records and prepares various reports for the Facilities Director or other departmental management as assigned,
  • Assigns decision making and work functions in an appropriate manner to maximize effectiveness; communicates clearly the parameters of the delegated responsibility and required actions, constraints or deadlines.
  • Participates in interviews and recommending hires; writes and issues performance appraisals; resolves problems; provides open communication, and recommends corrective action and/or termination, when appropriate.
  • Conducts or provides training programs on job skills, work regulations, landscaping methods, use of equipment, and safety practices; ensures all team members receive on-going training.
  • Develops the talents and skills of team members as measured by guest satisfaction, team member satisfaction, and successful team member advancement.
  • Develops a ‘team” atmosphere with team members and takes a pro-active leadership role.
  • Employs all forms of communication including verbal, written, graphic, and numerical/data in a professional manner.
  • Ensures uniform and personal appearance is clean and professional.
  • Supervises and assists in tree, shrub, and flower care, including planting, seeding, laying and cutting of sod, transplanting, pruning, and removal and checking for disease.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Conducts daily inspections of the Gaming Enterprise Division (GED) grounds to ensure the cleanliness of all areas.
  • Recommends and implements techniques to improve productivity and reduce costs.
  • Responsible for coordinating with contractors on repairs and preventive maintenance of landscaping work.
  • Recommends procedures for grounds maintenance.
  • Monitors equipment to ensure it is clean, well maintained, and properly functioning; reports any faults or defects for immediate action
  • Ensures that operating equipment is used properly and that all used equipment is returned to its correct storage place at the end of the shift.
  • Follows established safety and security policies and procedures including reporting accidents, injuries, and unsafe working conditions immediately to a supervisor. Identifies and corrects unsafe practices and conditions.
  • Keeps the Facilities management staff informed concerning daily operations.
  • Handles administrative work requirements, as assigned.
  • Coordinates procurement and usage of materials and equipment.
  • Provides budget input for personnel, equipment, supplies, and related items.
  • Assists with the development of short and long-term strategic planning.
  • Confers with management staff to review achievements and discuss needed changes in goals or objectives.
  • Follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies; uses as directed.
  • Supports and enforces departmental as well as the GED’s policies and procedures, and applicable regulatory policies, such as completion of Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Turns in found articles in accordance with Facilities and GED policies and procedures.
  • Attends periodic departmental and GED meetings; attends professional and personal development training programs.
  • Ensures uniform and personal appearance is clean and professional.
  • Ensures the smooth daily operation and guest appeal of Casino Del Sol and related properties.
  • Required to use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Work proactively with forward-looking, innovative approach to property maintenance and problem-solving.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, scheduling daily tasks and prioritizing work activities.
  • Supports property operations by responding promptly to landscape requests and emergencies.
  • Read blueprints and layout plans for installation and repairs; contact vendors and manufacturers in resolution of a difficult repair problems.
  • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs; maintain records of parts and materials used; order materials as needed.
  • Manage the Landscape inventory of supplies, materials, parts and equipment; coordinate annual inventory audit.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and work with staff to ensure a high-performance, customer service-oriented work environment that supports achieving objectives and service expectations; provide leadership and participate in programs and activities that promote a positive team member relations environment.
  • Determine and implement standards that address the functionality, security, sustainability, and efficient operation of facilities.
  • Identify energy conservation opportunities taking into account system interaction, utility rate structure, equipment life expectancy, maintenance, impact on building operation and relative payback period
  • Participate in the preparation of the annual operating budget forecast needs for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Assist with budget development with other Departments and as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Essential functions of the position:

  • Must be able to constantly lift, carry, and move up to one hundred (100) pounds, frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach above shoulder height, handle, pull, kneel, stoop, squat, grip, crouch, climb, crawl, twist, push, balance, and bend for duties, including inspections and work in confined or cramped spaces, indoor/outdoor events, uneven surfaces, and up or down stairs.
  • May be exposed to chemical, fumes, cleaning agents and other hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to perform primary job duties while exposed to inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold, heavy rain, or high-humidity environments for extended durations.
  • Must be able to follow both verbal and written directions.
  • Must be able to read, write, and effectively communicate with all guests, team members and internal/external vendors positively and professionally.
  • Must be able to work in environments with high noise levels, flashing lights, smoking areas, and large crowds.
  • Must be able to work in a high-pressure/fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to Travel/Work at any Casino Del Sol properties.
  • Must be able to comply with the 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic and routine landscaping methods, techniques, materials, chemicals, and equipment related to hardscapes and softscapes.
  • Knowledge of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Knowledge of the different kinds of turf, soil types, and drainage.
  • Knowledge of landscape controls and devices, appropriate Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and tools of the trade as well as materials and equipment and procedures used in installing, repairing and maintaining.
  • Knowledge of applicable Facilities related regulations as well as the Gaming Enterprise Division’s internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of purchasing, inventory control, and scheduling practices.
  • Knowledge of modern inventory, filing, and recordkeeping practices and procedures.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Skill in exercising independent judgment and initiative.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining good working relationships.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment and various computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite Software to include word processing and spreadsheets
  • Ability to read and implement blue prints and landscape schematics, grading and drainage, patio and walk construction, and water garden installation.
  • Ability to use skid steers, trailers, backhoes, power augers, tillers, and other heavy equipment related to the job.
  • Ability to respond to aural cues in full audible range in high noise conditions and be able to respond to visual cues and possess color perception.
  • Ability to withstand various indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to staff and guests both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence.
  • Ability to possess the coordination and dexterity to operate power and hand tools, including drills, electric saws, hammers, sewer snakes, and others.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and make recommendations.
  • Ability to make estimates of materials required.
  • Ability to repair and replace damaged parts and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and be fiscally prudent in accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to complete all required program Training Courses as needed within a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the horticulture industry or landscape design, including three (3) years supervisory experience OR any combination of academic education, professional training, or work experience.
  • Certification in the spraying of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software, especially word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, responsiveness, and initiative.
  • Demonstrated track record of providing excellent guest service.
  • Must be able to work (may require shift changes), weekends, holidays, and special events), as needed.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening in accordance with company policy.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • Must be able to obtain, and retain a valid gaming license/background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited community college or university.
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English).

The Gaming Enterprise Division and the Tribal Enterprise Division (collectively Casino Del Sol) are divisions of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
