Pay Range: $24.66hr -$35.77hr ($51,292.80 - $74,401.60/annually)

MAJORFUNCTION

Servesasthesenior-levelheavyequipmentoperatorresponsibleforthesafeandefficientoperationof heavyequipmentatPolkCounty'slandfill,and/ortransferstationfacilities.Thispositionplaysacritical role in daily site operation, including waste placement, waste compaction, excavation, environmental compliance, ensuring adherence to performance standards, solid waste industry best practices and the promotion of a strong safety culture.

ILLUSTRATIVEDUTIES

Operational Duties

  • Operates heavy equipment in the landfill environment, compaction of solid waste, transportationofcovermaterialsandcoverswaste(ie.DailyCover/IntermediateCover/Final Cover) in compliance with operational plan and regulatory permits.

  • Excavate,transport,andplacecovermaterialsonlandfillslopes(3:1and4:1grade)to promote

    stormwaterrunoffincompliancewithenvironmental regulations.

  • Maintainsandimprovesaccessroads,tippingfloor,andcustomerconvenienceareastoensure safe, timely, and efficient operation of the facility.

  • Constructsandmaintainsbermsanddrainagesystemstocontainleachateandeffectively manage stormwater.

  • Assistswithsiteappearancethroughactivelittercontrol,prevention,andcleanup initiatives.

  • Supportsthecontinuousimplementationofthesite'soperationsplan,alignedwithlocal and

    state regulations.

  • UtilizesallrequiredPPEandadherestosafetyprotocolsinvaryingweather,lighting,and environmental conditions.

  • Promotesasafety-firstatmospherebyensuringadherencetoPPErequirementsforemployees, contractors and customers.

KNOWLEDGE,ABILITIESANDSKILLS

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS

Graduateofanaccreditedhighschoolorpossessanacceptableequivalency diploma.

Musthaveaminimumoften(10+)years’progressivejobresponsibilitiesworkingatalandfilland/or transfer station processing a minimum of 2000 tons of municipal solid waste per day, effectively operating heavy equipment in a production role at a worksite.

Musthaveseven(7+)years’directfirst-classexperienceinconstructinglandfillcellsandslopesutilizing a landfill compactor and/or landfill dozer in the active tipping and disposal areas of a landfill, and/or transfer station in a lead role (or equivalent experience).

ValidDriver’slicenserequired;mustobtainaFloridalicenseuponemployment.Mustmaintainaclean driving record to operate an assigned county vehicle.

  • Musthaveandmaintainahometelephoneorimmediateaccesstocommunicationtoandfrom the workplace at the time of employment.

  • Must obtain and maintain University of Florida TREEO Center Landfill Certification within 12 monthsofemployment.(Passingscoreonrequiredexamis70%,continuingeducationcredits required annually to maintain this certification).

SPECIAL PREFERENCE

Privateindustry experience inlandfills,transferstations,collections, andrecycling center.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normalscopeoftheirposition,locationandworkscheduletofittheneedsoftheCountyandits citizens.

Overview

As outlined in the Polk County Charter, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) is the governing body of Polk County. Each commissioner is elected by a countywide vote.

Duties and Powers

The County Commission adopts an annual budget which includes appropriations for services provided by county government including the Sheriff, Property Appraiser, Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections. This budget also includes appropriations in support of the Circuit and County Courts, State Attorney, Public Defender and Clerk of the Court. Some other responsibilities:
