Job Description

Maintains and repairs trucks and heavy equipment. Incumbents in this class assist with more complex repairs and are expected to independently perform maintenance and repair of heavy equipment requiring routine diagnosis, removing and replacing parts, and troubleshooting for common mechanical problems.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment: checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts and balances tires; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; checks and replaces batteries; greases equipment; flushes radiators; and performs tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Performs routine and assists with complex repairs on trucks and heavy equipment: gathers information from equipment operator reports, fault codes and other diagnostic data; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; identifies items needing repair; completes required repairs; and ensures operation and performance is within specified limits.
  • Performs inspections: inspects and tests truck and heavy equipment systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC and emissions; completes or revises work order for repairs; obtains required parts; performs emission tests per frequency and criteria specified by state law; inspects and tests completed work; and updates required records.
  • Determines amount of materials required for projects: gathers equipment, parts and supplies; assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
  • Operates or uses various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; and operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and/or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May assist in performing welding, fabrication, and modification of work.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED with vocational training in automobile mechanics and repair.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance;

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Possesses knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of servicing and repairing equipment; drivetrains, suspensions and braking systems, heating and air conditioning, electrical, air, hydraulic and other related systems; the use and operation of tools and machinery used in equipment repair work, the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Possesses limited proficiency in diagnosing malfunctions or defects in equipment, adapting available tools and parts to specific repair problems and interpreting technical instructions from manufacturer’s manuals and bulletins or other related data
  • Skilled in welding
  • Proficient in first aid, CPR and AED
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to properly complete written or computerized repair order documentation
  • Ability to utilize computerized maintenance management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to perform limited work independently

Licensing/Certification:

  • Possess a valid state operator/driver’s license for the type vehicle operated with good driving history
  • Possess two (2) ASE certifications for Medium and Heavy Truck Test series or three (3) years’ experience in Medium, Heavy Truck maintenance and the ability to obtain two ASE certifications within Twenty-four (24) months.
