Main Purpose and Function
The Landfill GIS Engineering Assistant supports the development, maintenance, and enhancement of Transfer & Landfill asset management datasets. This role supports technology products, including GIS applications, reports, and data visualizations, used for analysis, operations and maintenance planning and execution, and other tasks related to effective management of Transfer & Landfill assets over their lifecycle. This position reviews existing and new engineering design and as-built documents to digitize asset datasets through data entry, compiling, editing spatial, geographic, and non-spatial data into various databases.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
Identifies and responds to data needs and performs moderately complex data analysis related to Transfer & Landfill asset management, lifecycle costs and asset performance to support decision making. Data may relate to infrastructure design, construction and maintenance, leachate, gas, water, sewer, drainage, streets, electrical assets, rainfall patterns, water quality or other related records.
Manages, analyzes and presents geospatial data using GIS software such as ESRI ArcGIS. Creates maps, graphics, and presentations for internal use, website content, and internal communication.
Interprets engineering drawings and work packages; verifies technical information and documents field observations in corresponding datasets.
Liaises with consultants, contractors, engineers, other professionals, and stakeholders to confirm drawing and asset details and interpretation.
Updates the digital twin in GIS system linkages that enable VanMap, HANSEN and related applications.
Supports Transfer & Landfill Operations branch with general mapping needs, as required
Organizes and sometimes leads meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
Performs general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing documents.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by technical courses in engineering, geographic information systems (GIS) or others related to the work such as planning, urban studies, sustainability, engineering technology, environmental studies, or related field, plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)(eg: ArcGIS Pro)
Working knowledge of engineering mathematics and familiarity with elementary engineering practices
Working knowledge of database Management and Administration (eg SQL Server, Oracle, Access)
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Asset Management software (Hansen)
Ability to conduct reporting & Data Visualization (eg. Excel pivot tables, graphs, maps, status report)
Data entry experience
Ability to read and interpret various types of complex engineering drawings, plans, and specifications related to buildings and infrastructure.
Ability to conduct research, collect and analyze data, performing field studies and providing technical, communications
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
Ability toproblem solve and use analytical skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and to provide support and advice while functioning effectively in a team environment
Ability to meet transportation requirements.
