Landfill Gas Technician

Location: San Luis Obispo, CA
Salary: $80,000-$100,000 annually DOE
Bonus: 10% annual cash bonus

Company: Cold Canyon and Chicago Grade Landfills, Waste Connections companies.

Waste Connections is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Landfill Gas Technician to monitor and maintain landfill gas wells across multiple sites. This role is critical in ensuring proper gas extraction, preventing oxygen intrusion, and optimizing well performance. The ideal candidate will have experience in landfill gas systems, gas monitoring equipment, and valve balancing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Landfill Gas Well Balancing: Adjust valves on landfill gas wells to maintain optimal methane extraction rates while preventing excessive oxygen intrusion.
  • Monitoring & Calibration: Utilize the LFG devices to measure gas flow and quality; ensure at least monthly monitoring in compliance with regulations.
  • Monitoring & Calibration: Utilize Surface Emissions Monitors to assess surface emissions; ensure at least quarterly monitoring or other timelines in compliance with regulations.
  • System Optimization: Adjust wells strategically to maintain site-wide gas flow efficiency, preventing disturbances in the overall well field balance.
  • Inspection & Maintenance: Regularly check all gas lines and well connections for blockages, ensuring proper gas flow and system integrity.
  • Site Coordination: Plan and coordinate well adjustments and maintenance with landfill crews, particularly when raising wells due to new waste deposits.
  • Data Collection & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of gas readings, well modifications, and system performance; provide clear documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Technology & Equipment Management: Ensure LFG devices and other monitoring tools are calibrated and functioning properly.
  • Inspection and maintenance of LFG transmission lines including LFG sumps ensuring pumps and liquid levels are properly maintained.
  • Inspection and light maintenance of LFG control system which includes blowers, flare, data recorders, flow meters, etc.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and regulatory requirements related to landfill gas operations.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience in landfill gas management, environmental monitoring, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Familiarity with landfill gas monitoring systems (e.g., GEM machines) and gas well balancing techniques.
  • Ability to analyze data and make informed adjustments to gas extraction systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in the field.
  • Technical aptitude with equipment calibration and troubleshooting.
  • Computer proficiency for documentation, reporting, and data analysis.
  • Willingness to travel between landfill sites throughout the week.
  • Valid driver’s license.
