He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council's Property Department has an opportunity for a Land Use Advisor to join our Land Use team.
This is a role where no two days are the same. You'll become a trusted advisor, providing specialist land use advice that helps balance legislative requirements, community outcomes and the long-term stewardship of Auckland's public land.

Working across a wide variety of projects, you'll assess requests for activities on Council-owned land, provide expert advice on statutory processes and collaborate with teams across the organisation to balance community outcomes, legislative requirements and commercial considerations. You'll be joining a collaborative team of specialists who are passionate about protecting Auckland's public spaces while enabling positive outcomes for our communities.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

• Assessing land use requests, landowner approvals, easements, encroachments and affected party approvals.
• Providing specialist advice on the Resource Management Act, Reserves Act and Local Government Act.
• Researching land history and preparing high-quality technical advice and reports.
• Partnering with Council departments, external organisations, local boards and customers to achieve practical land use outcomes.
• Building strong relationships while navigating complex issues within Auckland Council's political environment.
• Acting as a trusted advisor to Council teams by providing practical, risk-based land use advice.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You may come from a planning, property, legal or similar statutory advisory background and enjoy applying legislation to real-world situations. You're naturally curious, enjoy researching complex issues and can confidently provide balanced advice that helps others make informed decisions.

You're equally comfortable interpreting legislation, managing competing priorities and providing exceptional customer service, even when conversations are challenging.

We're looking for someone with:

• A background in, town planning, property, legal, resource management or another related discipline, supported by a relevant tertiary qualification.
• At least three years' experience applying legislation such as the Resource Management Act, Reserves Act, Local Government Act and/or Public Works Act.
• Experience providing clear, practical advice and building productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, research and written communication skills, with the ability to interpret legislation and navigate complex issues.
• A full New Zealand driver's licence (or another reliable means of travelling across the Auckland region).

It would also be advantageous if you have:

• Experience within local government or another organisation operating in a statutory or regulatory environment.
• Experience in planning, land use, property, parks or public sector asset management.
• Compliance or regulatory experience supported by broader advisory or statutory expertise.
• Experience managing competing priorities while working across multiple projects.
• Conflict resolution or negotiation experience.
