About the opportunity

Would you like to join a dynamic team where you can make a significant impact in your autonomous role as a Lactation Consultant?

This is a unique opportunity to join a specialised and passionate team committed to the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) standards. As a Lactation Consultant, you will rotate through the Postnatal Ward, Nursery and Outpatients Clinic at Mercy Hospital for Women, providing expert breastfeeding support and education to mothers, babies, families, and staff.

You will operate with a high level of clinical expertise and autonomy, leading change initiatives, implementing evidence-based practice, and mentoring colleagues across the Women’s and Children’s Program. This role is ideal for a self-directed clinician who thrives in a consultative capacity and is passionate about improving outcomes through education, innovation, and collaboration.

Primary Purpose of the Role

  • Provide quality, client-focused care to women, their families, and health professionals seeking support with lactation and breastfeeding management.
  • Promote excellence in clinical practice and uphold BFHI standards across antenatal and postnatal care.
  • Lead and implement clinical improvements and education programs across Mercy Health.
  • Contribute to policy and procedure development and ensure alignment with accreditation standards.

What you’ll bring

You’re resilient, compassionate and have a whole lot of heart. Most importantly, you are committed to delivering exceptional patient-centred care.

To thrive in this role, you will have:

  • Nursing/Midwifery registration with AHPRA
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a Lactation Consultant
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and lead clinical change
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and educate staff across disciplines
  • Strong understanding of BFHI principles and commitment to family-centred care
  • Proven ability to translate clinical learnings into practice for both patients and colleagues
  • Experience in developing and reviewing clinical policies and procedures
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and contribute to integrated care planning

You will also be required to provide evidence of, or in the process of obtaining:

  • A current Police Record Check and Working with Children Check.
  • Proof of current influenza vaccination and other vaccination status consistent with public health orders.
