Job Description

This position will be located at NASA’s Langley Research Center.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the Facility Operations Directorate to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE) located at NASA Langley Research Center. This position reports directly to the Software Development Manager

Seeking experienced software developers with strong LabVIEW developer experience needed to support aerodynamic research at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). This position with the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering (CMOE) contract at LaRC is part of a team that supports Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) and Facility Automation System (FAS) at wind-tunnel, lab or test facilities on Center. This position will provide support for designing, building, and maintaining data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation systems using LabVIEW programming. Additional software languages used in the team include MATLAB, C/C++, C#, Python. A combination of old and new, software and hardware, the work is hands-on, varied and unique. Critical skillsets include LabVIEW systems design, software development, project and team leadership, technical expertise, and safety focused reliability.

Responsibilities:

Support Ground Data Systems at NASA Langley Wind Tunnel and Test facilities:

  • Maintain, design, develop, port to new versions of LabVIEW and operating systems, perform troubleshooting, perform system testing, and release management for implemented LabVIEW software products.
  • Provide system designs for new LabVIEW solutions or to upgrade existing solutions.
  • Work with sensors, instruments such as pressure systems, pressure transducer, thermocouples, strain gauges, force and moment measurement balances.
  • Work with control systems such as PLCs, HMIs, valves, meters and gauges.
  • Apply the NASA Software Engineering process requirements such as configuration management, requirements management, system design, testing, and release management.
  • Lead, mentor and train a small team of new LabVIEW developers to develop user intuitive, visual interfaces focused on hardware interfacing and data processing.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

U.S. Citizenship required. BS Computer Science or Engineering related degree and at least five (5) years of practical work experience in software development specifically in the NI LabVIEW language to design data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation systems.

The ideal candidate will have worked in wind tunnel, industrial, or laboratory facility. Experience with leading and training other software developers required. Following software engineering standards and requirements is required. Experience in system design, equipment installation and system startup required. Experience with strain gauges, force and moment measurement balances, data acquisition instrumentation, pressure systems, precision filters highly desired. Certified LabVIEW Developer (or Architect) desired.

Essential Functions:

Work Environment

An office or Control Room environment is the typical work area. Travel between various facilities and test sites on Center is required. Project implementations or troubleshooting events will be in an industrial or laboratory environment. May be exposed to areas of high voltage, high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals and industrial facilities. (Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions.)

Equipment and Machine:

Software Tools: LabVIEW(primarily), C/C++, C#, MATLAB, Python, MS Office [Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio], AutoCAD or equivalent

Hardware platforms: Microsoft PC, Linux, National Instruments, PSI 8400, Optimus, NEFF, Precision Filters, PLCs, HMIs, PVs

Communications Protocol: TCP/IP, RS-232, IEEE-488, Modbus, OPC DA, OPC UA

Familiarity and use of safety and personal protective equipment

Physical Requirements:

Must have sufficient mobility to enter all areas of wind tunnel and test facilities. The ability to enter into confined spaces, crawl into or onto various assemblies while maintaining a clear vision of safety is required. Potential exposure to high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, propellants and the like. Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs.
