Laborer Leads assist the supervisor/manager with the daily activities and performance of the sort line laborer staff. This position provides leadership in directing the production and safety of the sorting line. The Laborer Lead will assure the quality of material being processed.

Responsibilities of Position:

  • Ensure all safety and compliance standards are met or exceeded on the sorting line
  • Ensure proper PPE is utilized by line employees as well as compliance with Lock- Out/Tag-Out procedures are adhered to consistently
  • Inspect materials and sort items or materials into designated areas according to type, size, condition, color, or paper grade
  • Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping to ensure an orderly work area
  • Dump boxes and containers of material into designated area(s)
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as needed
  • Coordinate the flow of product for the recycling operation ensuring quality control
  • Monitor and advise supervisor/manager of policy and/or procedure violations
  • Direct employees in completion of work
  • Train or assist in training new employees
  • Continuously monitor equipment to ensure proper operation and minimum down time and report issues accordingly
  • Load and/or unload tractor trailers as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position will not manage employees

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with other personnel and management
  • Ability to distinguish between various recyclable materials
  • Must be a self-starter with strong work ethic and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to understand and comply with all safety procedures

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:

  • General knowledge of the operation of various equipment (i.e., Forklift, baler, bobcat, sorting lines, etc.) is preferred

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:

  • Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 20 lbs
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
  • Occasionally working outside
  • Continuously working in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Continuously stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
  • Rarely sitting
  • Continuously standing/walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:

  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
