Job Description

Position Function:

Responsible for performing mammalian serology, virology, and chronic wasting disease testing. This position collaborates with internal lab personnel as part of a team.

Salary Grade 13

Please see Staff Compensation Structure or Skilled Crafts and Service Maintenance Compensation Schedule for salary ranges. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Area of Specialization:

MVRDL

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Perform tissue trimming in preparation for chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing.
2. Perform CWD ELISA testing from deer tissues
3. Perform CWD detection by RT-QuIC from tissues and environmental samples
4. Perform serological tests including ELISA, serum-neutralization, and indirect fluorescent antibody techniques for different mammalian species
5. Perform virological testing and related cell culture procedures
6. Perform annual inter- and intralaboratory proficiency tests as required to certify proficiency for anaplasma, Jonhe’s disease, bovine leukemia, bluetongue, chronic wasting disease and other animal testing.
7. Assisting with procedures, as needed, in different laboratory areas, and collaborating with other laboratory personnel.
8. Performing QA/QC duties and maintaining QA/QC records required for AAVLD accreditation.
9. Conducting laboratory housekeeping procedures (including but not limited to decontamination procedures, cleaning of glassware, and material preparation)
10. Maintaining records of data and performing data analysis.
11. All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors of Science degree with major course work in an appropriate field
-or-
Two years of post-secondary training or education in a life sciences field or other field appropriate for the assignment and two years of related lab work
-or-
Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent multitasking skills.
• Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of veterinary doctors, staff, and students
• Skill in the use of computers and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software packages.
• Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

* Work is normally performed in a typical interior/laboratory work environment.
* Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
* Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
* No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
* No or very limited physical effort required.
* Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
