Working collaboratively as part of the Genetics Laboratory team the successful candidate will perform nucleic acid extraction, tissue culture and harvest, equipment maintenance, quality and safety functions and general duties as directed. In addition, they will support Genetic Technologists in advanced molecular and cytogenetic techniques in line within the scope of Laboratory Technician’s in the CVH Genetics Lab.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree (Biology/Chemistry/Genetics) or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Laboratory Technician/Assistant course is an asset
  • Registration with or eligible for registration with a professional association such as MLPAO, OSMT or CSMLS (Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science) preferred
  • Prior Genetics lab experience and knowledge of Genetic Theory and Procedures preferred
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Professional and capable of developing effective working relationships
  • Attention to detail with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Well organized with effective prioritization and time management skills
  • Working knowledge of standard computer applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel). Experience in use of EPIC Beaker is an asset
  • Satisfactory attendance and performance required

Responsibilities

  • Accession, registration, preparation and processing of specimens for Genetic testing

  • Handling and preparation of specimens for dispatch to other sites for testing

  • Cell culture and harvesting following lab procedures and guidelines

  • Perform Cytogenetic and Molecular techniques to support laboratory testing as assigned

  • Preparation and handling of media, solutions and reagents

  • Performing all other duties consistent with the Laboratory Technician role as assigned
