About Our Team

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

APS is committed to education and professional development, providing excellent learning opportunities for students and clinicians. Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership and are delivering pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.

The role of the medical laboratory technician is to rotate through various sections of the Microbiology department at New Footscray Hospital, working as part of a laboratory team in the processing of specimens. The primary responsibilities of this role are:

Perform routine microbiological testing in accordance with approved methods and procedures.

  • Specimen reception duties including data entry, specimen distribution, organising send-away tests.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Conduct routine equipment checks, maintenance, and calibration activities.
  • Inventory receiving, maintaining stocks of supplies and consumables.
  • Support environmental monitoring and quality control programs.
  • Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), quality standards, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization within the laboratory.
  • Work collaboratively with laboratory staff to ensure timely release of results and efficient workflow management.

About You

Qualifications Required:

Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory) or equivalent.

Experience and Skills Required:

  • Previous laboratory experience in microbiology or a related laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of microbiological techniques and aseptic practices would be desirable.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Flexibility to work mornings, afternoon and weekend shifts.
