The position

The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKESK) operates 11 schools in various cities in Kenya and provides Nursery to Senior Secondary Education in both the National and International curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.

Laboratory Technician.

The Aga Khan Academy Nairobi, Senior School, is seeking a qualified and dedicated Laboratory Technician to join our team on a full-time basis. We are looking for an organized, detail-oriented individual with strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety practices to support science teaching and learning. The role involves preparing, maintaining, and organizing laboratory equipment and materials, assisting in practical sessions, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Prior experience in a school or educational laboratory setting is an advantage.
Reporting to: Head of Department, Science

Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with science staff to prepare and manage materials, equipment, and demonstrations for practical work.
  • Support teachers and students during experiments, ensuring correct use and care of equipment.
  • Maintain safe laboratory practices, including chemical handling, storage, disposal, and risk assessments.
  • Prepare solutions, stains, and media for use in laboratories.
  • Maintain inventory, manage procurement of materials, and ensure security of equipment.
  • Supervise and support technical assistants/technicians, where applicable.
  • Provide guidance on laboratory techniques, use of IT resources, and safety protocols.
  • Care for flora and fauna in line with IB regulations.
  • Liaise with suppliers and external organizations to source equipment.
  • Contribute to departmental budgeting and resource planning.
