Job Description

Laboratory Technician - Asphalt | Hope Valley & Gosnells, WA

Bring your lab experience to Downer and play a key role in the quality of the asphalt behind WA's major infrastructure. This is a hands-on materials testing role that splits your time between our NATA-accredited labs and live project sites, where you'll core and sample the work as it goes down.

At Downer we plan, create and sustain. We're one of the largest providers of integrated services across Australia and New Zealand, and our WA asphalt business supplies and lays the mixes behind major public infrastructure across Perth and the regions.

We're looking for Laboratory Technicians to join our teams at Hope Valley and Gosnells. The role runs across both the lab and the field: testing asphalt, bitumen and aggregates to make sure every mix meets specification, and getting out on site regularly to core and sample on active projects.

What the job looks like

  • Test asphalt, bitumen, aggregates and related road construction materials to Australian Standards, MRWA specifications and WA Test Methods
  • Prepare samples, run tests, record results and maintain accurate records under our NATA / ISO 17025 quality system
  • Head out to site regularly to core and sample on live projects, working alongside paving crews
  • Monitor asphalt product quality and support quality control across production and paving
  • Keep lab equipment calibrated, maintained and operated safely
  • Assist with investigations into product performance and test results as required
  • Take part in toolbox talks, safety initiatives and continuous improvement
  • Work collaboratively with production, paving and operational teams

What you'll bring

  • Certificate III or IV in Laboratory Techniques, Construction Materials Testing or a related qualification
  • Previous experience in asphalt, construction materials testing or a lab environment
  • Current driver's licence and General Construction Induction (White) Card
  • Knowledge of asphalt testing methods, Australian Standards and quality assurance processes
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate record-keeping and reporting
  • Comfortable with physical, outdoor work and site-based sampling
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to safety and Downer's Zero Harm principles

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with WA Test Methods and MRWA specifications

What's in it for you

  • A hands-on role with genuine variety across the lab and site
  • Overtime and night rates for out-of-hours work
  • Exposure to WA's largest asphalt and infrastructure projects
  • Work in a NATA-accredited lab and build recognised technical experience
  • Full-time employment with a market-leading organisation and room to grow
  • Proudly recognised as a WORK180 Endorsed Employer for all women
  • Access to a wide range of employee benefits and lifestyle discounts for you and your family
  • A supportive team environment focused on safety, quality and innovation

At Downer we value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels respected, valued and supported.
