Job Description

As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff representing many faith systems and worldviews, the E.S. Witchger School of Engineering at Marian University in Indianapolis invites applications for a full-time engineering Laboratory Technician position, starting August 2026. We seek candidates who will promote Marian University's Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by helping ensure the safe and efficient use of equipment in the lab, installing new equipment and servicing existing equipment in collaboration with suppliers and faculty, training faculty and students, and conducting regular inspections and documentation of laboratory safety equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Work with the dean, faculty, and staff to research, evaluate, purchase, and facilitate installation of engineering equipment for laboratories.
  • Provide support for all laboratory and instructional activities, facilities, and equipment needed for academic instruction and research.
  • Manage and improve engineering laboratory learning environments in Witchger Engineering, including developing and maintaining facilities, equipment, software, and instrumentation.
  • Provide training for students and faculty, as appropriate, in proper and safe use; develop and maintain standard operating procedures and laboratory policies.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate regular inspections, certifications, and documentation of laboratory safety equipment, including eyewash stations and safety showers, fire extinguishers, fume hoods, snorkels, etc., in coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support student design projects, student competitions, and special engineering outreach programs (i.e., science fairs, weekend K-12 workshops, summer camp).
  • Supervise student employees hired to support engineering laboratories.
  • Manage acquisition and storage of laboratory materials and supplies required for instructional and extra-curricular activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • An associate degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior experience in an engineering laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work independently with colleagues throughout the university and in the community.
  • Willingness to develop skills associated with a wide range of technical and developing areas in engineering.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University.
  • Experimental engineering laboratory experience in industry and/or educational setting.
  • Strong communicator at a variety of levels; demonstrated effective presentation skills.
  • Strong customer service focus and experience working with students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Experience with engineering design, fabrication, instrumentation, and/or experimentation (i.e., Computer Aided Design (CAD), machine shop, automation, additive manufacturing, sensors, electronics, data acquisition, etc.)
