The Laboratory Technician plays a critical role in supporting patient care by performing diagnostic testing across key disciplines such as biochemistry, haematology, and microbiology. The role includes specimen processing, analytical testing, equipment operation, and strict adherence to quality and safety protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Objective:

  • Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic testing to support clinical decision-making.
  • Operate within ISO 15189:2022-compliant quality systems and safety standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory processes and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Sample Handling and Processing
  • Receive, label, and process clinical specimens (blood, urine, fluids, etc.) per SOPs.
  • Prepare slides, aliquots, or cultures depending on the testing requirement.

2. Diagnostic Testing

  • Perform biochemical, hematological, or microbiological tests including:
    • CBC, ESR, reticulocyte count
    • Liver and kidney function tests, glucose, lipid panels
    • Bacterial culture, Gram stain, sensitivity testing
  • Operate automated analyzers and manual methods as needed.

3. Quality Control and Assurance

  • Conduct daily QC and participate in proficiency testing (PT/EQA).
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot lab equipment as per protocols.
  • Maintain documentation for compliance and traceability.

4. Reporting and Communication

  • Accurately record and report results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Notify clinicians of critical values promptly and ensure confidentiality of patient data.

5. Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance and escalate technical faults.
  • Document maintenance activities and ensure instrument readiness.

6. Safety and Compliance

  • Follow biosafety, infection prevention, and chemical safety procedures.
  • Comply with national regulations and internal quality management systems.

7. Teamwork and Development

  • Collaborate with lab staff, clinicians, and supervisors to ensure smooth workflows.
  • Participate in training, audits, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or related field.

Certifications:

  • Certified Biomedical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent by a recognized board

Experience:

  • Prior experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting preferred

Skills:

  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Proficient in using lab information systems and basic computer software
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
