Summary

This employee performs a variety of entry-level environmental sampling and laboratory tests on water or wastewater, records results, and maintains quality control in a laboratory. Performs related work as required.

Examples of duties

Knowledge of:

Analytical, organic, inorganic and environmental chemistry, biochemistry, bacteriology, and microbiology sufficient to learn to perform and interpret tests on water and wastewater.

Basic quality control procedures sufficient to perform and record results.

Basic scientific laboratory testing procedures sufficient to learn to perform a specific test.

The metric system sufficient to perform accurate readings and conversions from U.S. measure to metric.

Basic mathematics and basic research statistics such as range, mean, and mode.

Basic laboratory safety procedures.

Skill to:

Use precise measuring instruments such as balance scales, volumetric glassware, thermometers, and other basic equipment.

Visually inspect samples and specimens through a microscope.

Use a calculator to solve equations used in reporting results.

Read a street map.

Drive a car.

Perform routine maintenance on cars such as checking oil and gas.

Perform fine finger movements and possess a high degree of hand-eye motor coordination to perform tests.

Ability to:

Follow precise oral instructions.

Read and apply procedures in a variety of official and technical publications such as the Ohio EPA guidelines, Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater and 40 CFR part 136.

Read, understand, and follow written instructions.

Communicate results of tests to others.

Accurately complete reports and record test results.

Perform fine finger movements, and possess a high degree of hand-eye motor coordination to perform tests.

Prepare medias, broths, agars, dilutions, and other solutions required to complete tests.

Lift and carry heavy (25-50 lbs.) objects such as bottles of water.

Establish and maintain working relationships with others.

Qualifications

Each applicant must have thirty-two semester hours of science or engineering courses with sixteen semester hours of coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental engineering, environmental science, or other related laboratory sciences from a technical institute, college, or university.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Each applicant must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Must be willing to work irregular shifts at a variety of locations.

MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION

Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
