A Brief Overview
Supervises the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. Assists in selecting, training, evaluation and motivation of team members. Models the Stormont Vail Tenets of compassion, connection, patient safety and privacy, and improving the health of our community. Ensures high quality patient testing by directing the use of equipment and materials according to established policies, procedures, and laboratory standards.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. Preferred


Experience Qualifications

  • 2 years Laboratory experience. Required
  • Supervisory experience. Preferred


Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist - ASCP Certification by AMT or NCA is also accepted. Required or
  • Single discipline technologist or specialist certification in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology may be considered depending on the position.


What you will do

  • Performs the essential functions and marginal job duties of a medical laboratory scientist.
  • Responsible for quality assurance and quality control of the analytical activities of the department. Works collaboratively with the laboratory medical director(s) and department pathologists to meet the needs of our physicians, providers, and patients.
  • Ensures that the section meets standards set forth by accrediting agencies and governing bodies. Ensure enrollment and participation in proficiency testing.
  • Interprets and implements departmental and organizational policies and keeps team members advised in advance of changes which will affect them. Builds a professional team through coaching and mentoring. Upholds standards for attendance and professional behavior and applies personnel policies equitably.
  • Prepares work schedule. Adjusts daily schedule and individual work assignments and coordinates cross training as required for efficient utilization of personnel. Interviews and recommends applicants for open positions.
  • Evaluation and documentation of testing personnel training and competency. Responsible for periodic and annual review of job performance by subordinate staff. Identifies training needs and provides regular in-service education.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies and equipment for the department. Assists laboratory director and/or department director in development of budget, policies, procedures, position description, work standards and goal setting.
  • Provides regular status reports to laboratory managers and/or director of staff concerns and attitudes of staff, continual improvement activities, accreditation readiness, and other issues related to the operation of the lab. Applies all the policies equitably with all employees.
  • Builds a safety culture by following best practices for laboratory and patient safety. Ensures that team members utilize all safety equipment and follow all safety procedures outlined by the laboratory and hospital policies.
  • Assists lab senior leadership with selection of test methodology appropriate for clinical use. Develops, writes and executes validation protocols, to include establishment of test performance characteristics.
