Please note that this is a 17.5 hour per week, fixed term contract. This contract is expected to begin July 1, 2026 and conclude June 30, 2027.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Chair, the Laboratory Supervisor supports teaching, learning, and research within the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies by coordinating and delivering high quality laboratory and field based activities. The position provides specialized technical expertise, ensures the safe and effective operation of laboratory and field environments, and manages equipment, spaces, and resources essential to academic programming and research. The Laboratory Supervisor works closely with faculty, instructors, and students, providing support with laboratory instruction and research, maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and contributing to recruitment, outreach, and departmental initiatives.

The Laboratory Supervisor will adhere to all applicable federal and provincial regulations governing the safe handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory chemicals, and will maintain accurate and up-to-date records in accordance with institutional health and safety protocols

The Laboratory Supervisor will:

• Design, develop, deliver, and continuously improve laboratory and field based learning activities that support Geography and Tourism Studies curricula, ensuring alignment with course objectives, disciplinary standards, and emerging methodologies;
• Collaborate with faculty and instructors to develop, test, revise, and implement laboratory and field equipment, demonstrations, manuals, assessments, and learning objectives;
• Prepare, set up, coordinate, deliver, and dismantle laboratory and field equipment, providing hands on instruction;
• Develop, maintain, and annually update laboratory and field manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and assessment documentation;
• Assist and attend off-campus course-related field trips and labs;
• Collect, manage, analyze, and document data generated through student laboratory and field activities, ensuring accuracy, reproducibility, and proper recordkeeping;
• Test, troubleshoot, and refine laboratory and field protocols involving quantitative and qualitative analysis;
• Train and support students, teaching assistants, laboratory assistants, and staff in the safe and effective use of laboratory and field equipment, techniques, and data collection tools;
• Manage the full lifecycle of laboratory and field equipment used in Geography and Tourism Studies;
• Forecast, procure, receive, label, inventory, store, and monitor chemicals, gases, consumables, and field supplies;
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules and coordinate vendor servicing to ensure equipment reliability and regulatory compliance;
• Provide professional, technical, and representational support to advance departmental recruitment, outreach, governance, and strategic initiatives;
• Oversee students and Teaching Assistants in a laboratory setting.

Key Skills and Experience:

• Experience working with related laboratory materials and equipment;
• In depth knowledge of Geography and Tourism Studies methodologies, including field based research, laboratory instruction, data collection, and environmental analysis;
• Knowledge of laboratory and field safety standards, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance;
• Understanding of laboratory and field instrumentation, equipment lifecycle management, calibration standards, and preventative maintenance practices relevant to geography and environmental studies;
• Knowledge of post-secondary instructional practices, experiential learning models, and the integration of laboratory and field activities into academic curricula;
• Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community;
• Demonstrated instructional skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts, demonstrate techniques, and support student learning in hands on lab and field environments;
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with faculty, students, technical staff, and external service providers;
• Ability to train and support students, teaching assistants, and staff in equipment use, safety protocols, and technical procedures;
• Strong technical skills in setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory and field equipment used in Geography and Tourism Studies;
• Excellent organizational and planning skills to coordinate multiple laboratory, field, and instructional activities while meeting academic timelines;
• Ability to develop and maintain laboratory manuals, standard operating procedures, safety documentation, and assessment materials;
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to test protocols, interpret data, and resolve technical or instructional issues; and
• Strong record keeping and data management skills to maintain inventories, compliance documentation, service logs, and assessment records.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

• First aid certificate.

Salary and Total Rewards:

• Job Grade M, Salary Scale ($74,235-$118,776);
• Target Hiring Range: $74,235-$85,000*
• This is a fixed term contract position that includes up to 3 weeks per year of vacation, pro-rated to reflect the term of the appointment, in addition to university holidays.

*The final salary would be prorated to reflect part time (17.5) hours per week and is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.
