Laboratory Research Operations Senior Technician
Arts and Sciences | Physics Administration
Manage and operate a small-scale helium gas collection and liquefaction system for production and supply of liquid helium used by research groups within the Department of Physics engaged in experiments at low temperature. Schedule production runs and monitor and calculate usage rates to ensure an adequate supply of helium is on-hand for end users. Manage ordering and procurement of liquid helium to supplement usage needs. Distribute liquid helium to end users by using portable storage tanks to transport liquid helium from the system location to labs arranged throughout the building. Operate and maintain liquid nitrogen weigh scale system. Manage ordering and procurement of liquid nitrogen and internal billings of liquid nitrogen to end users and external billings to gas users in adjacent buildings. Participate in management of capitalized assets and periodic audits thereof. Participate in equipment surplus process and in the preparation of equipment bundles being sent to surplus. Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Qualifications:
High School diploma or GED required with Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related area desired. Two years of work experience required with four years desired.
Other Qualifications Include:
-Lifting objects up to 50 lbs., climbing on ladders, operating pallet jacks, carts, and other simple material handling tools, mechanical aptitude, mastery of basic hand tools, power tools, and electronic diagnostic equipment such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
-Ability to safely and efficiently operate a small-scale helium collection and liquefaction system.
-Ability to accurately and consistently gather and interpret data related to:
- rate of production of the helium system
- rate of consumption of helium by research end users
- procurement data and pricing trends for helium supplied by others
-Ability to synthesize system data and formulate and execute a rational production plan for helium gas recovery and reliquefication that will be supplemented by procurement of liquid helium from external suppliers.
-Ability to make minor repairs and to efficiently engage external repair service providers to maintain the system in a functional state.
-Must possess, or be willing and able to obtain, a basic understanding of the following engineering documents describing the Department's cryogenic systems and processes:
-Process and Instrumentation Diagrams/Schematics
-Functional Descriptions
The pay range for this job profile is $22.93-$29.95. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
