Supervises departmental activities to achieve quality service and outcomes. Accounts for day-to-day patient testing within the laboratory, defined by either single cost center and/or greater than 10 but less than 30 full-time employees and/or limited specialized training. Actively promotes a lean work culture by performing group leader duties to encourage consistent use of Lean principles and processes, including continually seeking work process improvements. Assists leadership team with administrative and technical support as required. Recognizes necessity of staff to own their motivation, morale, performance, and professional development. Actively encourages performance and behavior consistent with a commitment to the lab’s and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's mission, goals, and values by providing the materials and processes necessary to be successful.

Experience

  • 4 years of experience as a medical technologist or histotechnologist in a high complexity clinical laboratory setting

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution

Certification Summary

  • Current certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Histotechnician/Histotechnologist (ASCP or equivalent)
  • Eligible Georgia Department of Human Resources supervisor certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, terminology, and regulatory agency standards
  • Must have technical expertise for all procedures within a functional area and ability to oversee complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Independent judgment and responsibility
  • Strong organizational capabilities, good communication skills, enthusiasm, willingness to work with others, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Strives for adult-adult relationships with staff and provides support that promotes staff engagement, success, and ownership of morale and interactions with other staff

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and directs testing activities.
  • Performs duties, makes decisions, takes actions, and continually strives to improve work processes using an awareness of how work performed is valued by the customer.
  • Ensures sufficient quantities of supplies, reagents, and qualified/competent staff are available to meet standards of care as appropriate for age of patients served in a cost-effective manner.
  • Supervises laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, evaluating work performed, and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
  • Implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment, and ongoing compliance with federal regulations and other regulatory agencies.
  • Prepares and maintains applicable records.
  • Prepares administrative reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized, and test results.
  • Coordinates preparation of reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Performs technical functions of Medical Technologist 3 or Senior Histotechnician as outlined in MT or HT job description and performs other duties as required by department.
  • Participates actively in hiring new staff.
  • Coaches team members and clarifies performance expectations for each.
  • Provides timely feedback in a positive manner that supports staff success and promotes ownership and commitment.
  • Completes annual performance evaluations.
  • Follows departmental and system policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance.
  • Provides job breakdown sheets and encourages adherence to standard work and continual process improvement.
  • Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes.
  • Facilitates implementation of lean process improvement ideas.
  • Performs standard work, metric reviews, audits, and gemba walks.
  • Manage the day to day operations of the staff, including but not limited to: work assignments, task management, time tracking/management, and on-the-job training.
  • Take an active role in coaching and mentoring the team to ensure continued employee growth and success both on the team and at the broader CHOA organization.
  • Assist manager with employee performance evaluations and hiring decisions.
