Job Description

We are looking for a Laboratory Operations & Safety Manager to work in our Tampere based engineering Center of Excellence for FACTS (STATCOM & SVC) solutions. The role focuses on safe, efficient, and well-coordinated operation of the laboratory used for testing protection and control panels for FACTS control systems. The role has overall responsibility for laboratory scheduling, laboratory safety, access and competence control, equipment management, and measurement device governance.

The Laboratory Manager ensures that laboratory resources, facilities, responsibilities, and safety conditions are in place for successful execution of testing across multiple projects.

Key responsibilities

Laboratory operations and scheduling

  • Plan, coordinate, and manage laboratory test slot allocation for all FACTS test laboratories in Tampere area across multiple projects.
  • Work closely with project management and team leaders to align testing schedules with project milestones and resource availability.
  • Resolve conflicts in laboratory utilization and optimize capacity usage.
  • Arrange temporary or external test facilities when internal laboratory space is insufficient.

Test activity coordination

  • Ensure that each laboratory test slot has a clearly nominated responsible person.
  • Verify that responsibilities for test execution, safety, and laboratory tidiness are clearly assigned for each test period.
  • Support efficient preparation and turnover of test setups between projects.

Laboratory safety and compliance

  • Hold overall responsibility for laboratory safety and safe working conditions.
  • Ensure lockout/tagout equipment is available and properly used where required.
  • Ensure power supplies and electrical test arrangements are safe, suitable, and periodically checked.
  • Control access to laboratory areas so that only qualified and authorized personnel are permitted to perform or participate in testing.

Test equipment management

  • Manage laboratory test equipment availability, condition, maintenance status, and suitability for ongoing and planned test activities.
  • Identify future laboratory equipment needs and plan investments together with product owners and relevant stakeholders.

Measuring devices and calibration management

  • Manage measuring devices used in the laboratory.
  • Maintain a measuring device database with relevant equipment records and status information.
  • Ensure calibration cycles are defined, followed, and documented.

Electrical responsibility

  • Act as:
    • Person in charge of electrical work
    • Person in charge of operation of electrical installations
  • Ensure electrical work and operation of installations are managed in accordance with applicable regulations, internal requirements, and safe working practices.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Relevant technical education in electrical engineering, power systems, automation, or similar field.
  • Experience in laboratory, testing, commissioning, or operations environment related to electrical systems, protection and control, automation, or power electronics.
  • Good understanding of protection and control panels and associated testing environments.
  • Basic knowledge of content and duration of:
    • control system hardware functional testing
    • protection testing
    • SCADA testing
    • cybersecurity testing
    • RTDS testing
  • Experience in planning and coordinating activities across multiple projects.
  • Experience in electrical safety management in an industrial or laboratory environment.
  • Experience managing test equipment and/or measuring devices is highly desirable.
  • Qualification, eligibility, or capability to act in the roles of:
    • Person in charge of electrical work
    • Person in charge of operation of electrical installations according to local legal and company requirements.
