CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

Level TBD: the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; ore because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Laboratory Mentor will be fully based in the designated Abyei Administrative Area and will be responsible for supporting the establishment, strengthening, and quality assurance of laboratory services in primary health care facilities in Abyei. The role focuses on building staff capacity, ensuring adherence to laboratory standards, and improving the accuracy and reliability of diagnostic service. The Laboratory Mentor will Work closely with the AAA health authorities and partners in providing on-the-job training to health and lab staff, and Support outbreak response activities when necessary.

To provide regular information and period reports on the project activities as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in establishing and running basic laboratory services, ensuring equipment and supplies are available and properly used.
  • Manage laboratory services, materials, and reagents in accordance with established MoH standards and protocols.
  • Provide on-the-job training for health and lab staff, strengthen capacity in sample collection and handling, and improve biosafety and IPC practices.
  • Maintain laboratory registers and ensure timely reporting of results to the Medical Officer and project team.
  • Implement QA/QC systems, perform supportive supervision and mentorship visits, and ensure adherence to national standards.
  • Observe universal precautions and ensure that staff assisting in the lab conforms to the same
  • Conduct monthly inventory of laboratory reagents and make timely requisitions.
  • Ensure the proper safekeeping of laboratory equipment and reagents, and the smooth operation of the laboratory.
  • Ensure safe and correct disposal of sharps, healthcare waste materials as required per the MoH Health facilities SOPs.
  • Monitor consumption and inventory levels, support requisition and distribution of supplies, and ensure proper storage and maintenance of equipment. Participating in staff meetings, as may be required.
  • Ensure working environment in the laboratory is as per the MoH standards and guidelines
  • Participating in outbreak investigation where necessary
  • Ensures that all procedures are properly documented in the laboratory registers
  • Ensure accurate data recording and reporting, support integration into HMIS, and prepare regular reports.
  • Able to carry out any other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned by his/her immediate supervisor.
  • Provide feedback and information that are of relevance to the program.

Qualification/ Experience

  • Diploma and preferably degree in laboratory investigation and services from a recognised institution.
  • Gained training/ mentorship skills in capacity strengthening laboratory technician or assistant experiences from a recognized institution.
  • 3-5 years’ experience working and mentoring lab staff in a busy health facility (desirable)
  • Fluent in English and Arabic; knowledge of local languages an advantage
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions in an isolated area

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the area where the post is located
  • Proven team and personnel management experience
