We’re looking for a Laboratory Manager to join our Technical/Laboratory team in Mt Wellington. You’ll lead our IANZ‑accredited construction materials testing laboratories and a diverse team of technicians, delivering high‑quality, on‑time and compliant testing that underpins major infrastructure and pavement projects across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
As our Laboratory Manager, you’ll oversee the day‑to‑day operation of our central Auckland materials testing laboratory and satellite facilities in Silverdale and Drury. This is a hands‑on, multi‑site leadership role covering both laboratory and field testing for asphalt, bitumen, aggregates and other construction materials. You’ll ensure our testing is safe, accurate, efficient and compliant with IANZ and relevant standards, while supporting internal and external clients across a range of projects. In this key leadership position, you’ll have scope to influence quality, innovation and continuous improvement in how we deliver our testing services.
Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities
Lead and manage the central Auckland laboratory and satellite labs in Silverdale and Drury, including day‑to‑day operations
Oversee all IANZ‑accredited testing activities, ensuring compliance with IANZ requirements and relevant standards (e.g. NZS, ASTM, AS/NZS)
Manage, mentor and develop a team of laboratory and field technicians, including training, coaching and performance management
Plan and coordinate asphalt, bitumen, aggregate and other construction materials testing programmes in both the lab and the field to meet project and client requirements
Maintain and continuously improve quality systems, procedures and documentation, including preparation for and follow‑up from audits
Drive a strong health, safety and environmental culture, ensuring all activities meet Fulton Hogan standards and legislative requirements

Proven experience in a laboratory management or senior technical role within construction materials testing (asphalt, bitumen, aggregates, soils or related)
A strong understanding of IANZ accreditation, quality management systems and audit processes
Holds a tertiary qualification in civil engineering, materials science or a related discipline, or has substantial equivalent experience
Proven people management skills including the ability to lead, mentor and coach staff, building a positive, high‑performing team culture
A strong communicator who liaises confidently and effectively with clients, project teams and auditors
Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines
Sound computer skills, including experience with laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office
A current full NZ driver’s licence, and flexibility to travel between Auckland, Silverdale and Drury as required
