General Accountability:

Perform technical jobs by using the following methods: 1) slide and QEMSCAN/TESCAN puck preparation, 4) numerous computer and photo imaging duties, 5) QEMSCAN / TESCAN analysis: setting up for various analysis modes (PMA, BMA, TMS), 6) XRD set-up. Review and interpret data as required to ensure accuracy of analysis. Perform regular calibration checks.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Competent analysis of QEMSCAN/TESCAN BMA, PMA and TMS data;

  • Competent spectra data from the QEMSCAN / TESCAN and undertake SIP development with minimal supervision;

  • Able to perform optical QC checks of sulphide ratios and liberations;

  • Efficient in QEMSCAN / TESCAN spreadsheet setup;

  • Competent in setup and maintenance pertaining to the XRD instrument;

  • Competent in preparing sample pucks and slide grain mounts as well as train and supervise new technicians;

  • Competent in conducting maintenance on sample preparation equipment;

  • Competent in conducting maintenance on QEMSCAN / TESCAN SEM equipment;

  • Able to use all skills gained to troubleshoot any problems incurred in mineralogical analysis seeking assistance where required from the mineralogy manager or lead hand;

  • Identify & correct QC related problems by ensuring the quality of the mineralogy data meets ALS standards;

  • Ensure samples for project work assigned by manager or lead hand are accounted for in the lab;

  • Prioritize workloads according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;

  • Maintain and organize inventory of calibration standards, production logs and equipment records;

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following all safety requirements within the Safety Manual and communicate all safety concerns to the mineralogy lab manager or lead hand.

  • Other tasks as assigned by mineralogy lab manager or lead hand.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and mechanical skills;

  • Quality focused individual;

  • Organized, highly motivated, detail oriented and able to work independently or as part of a team;

  • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;

  • Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal);

  • Strong MS Office skills, specifically MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

Required Qualifications:

  • Recognized Diploma or Degree in Sciences required;

  • Minimum of 4-5 years laboratory work experience in mineralogy, instrumentation or a related field preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand for 8 hours per day. Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks;

  • Able to lift filled 20 litre containers (45 lb).
