JOB SUMMARY:
Provides support, encouragement, and education for breastfeeding Mothers and infants in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Performs specialized lactation assessment and charts appropriately to findings. Educates staff members with up-to-date evidence-based education regarding infant feedings, lactation, formula, assistive devices…etc. Notifies appropriate care providers on abnormal assessments and concerns regarding the mother and infant and can make appropriate suggestions to help maintain safety and a good outcome. The lactation specialist is responsible for providing safe, family centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient’s family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Specialist demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. As an integral member of the health care team, the Lactation Specialist functions within their scope of practice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Actively promotes breastfeeding and assists mothers in reaching their personal goals for breastfeeding.
2. Provides direct patient care in Labor, Postpartum, and NICU.
3. Performs specialized latch and breastfeeding assessment and evaluation.
4. Supports programs such as support groups and breastfeeding classes.
5. Organizes information and posters for activities to promote breastfeeding.
6. Assists with patient, family and staff breastfeeding education in coordination with the Postpartum Educator.
7. Communicates with primary care nurses and/or providers regarding mother or infant abnormal findings (problems with milk supply, problems with infant weights, jaundice, SGA…..etc.).
8. Implements and maintains a reference library of breastfeeding materials appropriate for both healthcare providers and mothers interested in learning more about lactation.
9. Assess patient and family emotional, cognitive, social, and motivational status relative to learning and determines their educational needs and priorities.
10. Adjusts teaching/feeding plan to meet patient and family needs.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: Must be a current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) ---- OR-----Completed the “Certified Lactation Counselor” (CLC) program or “Certified Lactation Educator” (CLE) with certificate. CLC or CLE will continue their education to become an International Board Revised February 2025 Page 2 of 7 Mountain View Hospital Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) encouraged to obtain within 2 years of hire.
Experience: : Preferably at least 1 year of experience on a postpartum unit where breastfeeding education and assessments were provided.
