Job Description

The laboratory technician will be responsible for working with a team to accurately and consistently test construction materials related to asphalt mixes in a timely manner. This will involve the breakdown of road and quarry material, batching and producing specimens, testing specimens, analyzing data, and problem solving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITION:

  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task
  • Follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Always observe safe work practices
  • Follow quality control guidelines and industry approved testing and preparation standards
  • Record and organize information from a variety of sources accurately
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the mix design team, D.O.T. personnel, and personnel from various agencies
  • Obtain state D.O.T., county, city, etc. materials and testing standards in a timely manner
  • Collect samples from existing roads, quarries, and plant locations for evaluation
  • Use a variety of heavy-duty saws and drills to effectively prepare road samples
  • Prepare and test specimens according to industry standards and specifications
  • Evaluate and analyze test results and take corrective action when needed
  • Assist in general maintenance and calibration of all laboratory and road equipment
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Time management skills and superb multitasking ability
  • Effective communication skills
  • Respond proactively to anticipated needs or issues
  • Learn quickly and work autonomously
  • Read, understand, and follow ASTM, AASHTO, D.O.T., county, etc. testing methods
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds
  • Capability of interacting with individuals from a variety of backgrounds
  • Work well in a team environment
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
  • Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 85 pounds personally and up to 140 pounds with assistance.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust
  • Work may involve a variety of substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, sharp metal objects, asphalt, and ready mixed concrete.
