Purpose of role:
Analyse and monitor all samples to support daily plant operations.
Report test results accurately and on time for quality decision‑making.
Support all QC activities to ensure smooth and compliant laboratory operations.
Key Results/ Accountabilities:
Sample Analysis & Quality Control
Analyse all raw materials and lubricant samples; including locally manufactured products, imported/third‑party products, trial blends, new formulations and customer complaint samples; according to approved test methods and specifications.
Blend Correction & Compliance
Conduct lab trials for blending correction and support any required lab trials.
Amend the Work Order Part List in JDE, cascade blend‑correction instructions, and ensure all adjustments comply with Master Formulation and GLT QA Manual limits.
Reporting & System Transactions
Report test results accurately and in a timely manner, update density and other required data in JDE, and highlight any pending or out‑of‑spec results to the QC Chemist.
Instrument Calibration & Standards
Perform instrument calibration, conduct routine instrument monitoring using internal standards and prepare required chemicals, standards and reagents.
Laboratory Operations & Housekeeping
Maintain good laboratory practice by ensuring proper disposal and labelling of waste, managing gas cylinders, and keeping the laboratory clean, safe and well‑organized at all times.
Documentation, Procedures & Supply Management
Maintain accurate records of chemicals, standards, and consumables; support the purchasing, receiving, and storage of laboratory supplies; and assist in preparing or updating laboratory procedures and work instructions.
Shift Operations, Team Support & Other Assigned Tasks
Work on shift, provide backup support within the laboratory team including base‑oil shipment analysis, use discretionary time effectively and perform any tasks assigned by the QA/QC Manager or QC Chemist in the interest of the company.
Key challenges:
Ensuring Quality Before Release
Support plant operations by making sure all raw materials, WIP, and finished products meet specifications before release. Lab Technicians must have the confidence and authority to stop and investigate any suspected or actual non‑conformance.
Timely Testing and Communication
Complete tests, updates, and any required adjustments on time, and inform the relevant teams quickly to avoid delays or impact to production and supply.
Strict Compliance to Procedures and Standards
Follow all laboratory processes, test methods, safety rules, and quality standards to prevent Safety, Quality, and Compliance issues—especially for products supplied to both local and export markets.
Shift Work and Operational Support
Work on rotating shifts, operate independently during off‑hours, and attend base‑oil shipments when required.
Experience & Expertise:
Education
Minimum Technical Diploma, preferably in Chemistry.
Other science/technical diplomas may be accepted with relevant lab experience.
Computer Skills
Basic PC skills and able to use common software.
Able to learn lab‑related systems (e.g. JDE, network systems).
Language
Able to speak and write in both English and Malay.
Communication
Able to understand lab documents, test methods and work instructions.
Able to communicate clearly in both written and verbal form.
Laboratory Experience
Basic experience handling laboratory instruments and understanding how they work.
Preferably has experience working in a lubricant or chemical laboratory.
HSSE Accountabilities
Actively take part in all phases of both team and cross functional team meetings, such as department daily safety talk, plant monthly safety meeting, etc.
Observe and abide by all safety precautions and regulations.
Support company documents such as Quality Policy, HSSE Policy, etc
Align with all bp’s HSSE policies and procedures including wearing of personal protective equipment; accident, injury, incident and near miss reporting; and the correct use of equipment.
Align with all HSSE directions of line manager or HSSE manager
Participate in HSSE training and discussions, workplace inspections and audits, and assist in the resolution of health and safety issues as required.
Contribute to successful implementation of HSSE programmes and initiatives.
Required Competencies:
Laboratory Test Knowledge - Understand the principles, purpose, and significance of laboratory tests, and be familiar with ASTM, IP, and in‑house test methods.
Trial Blend & Formulation Execution - Able to carry out laboratory trial blends based on given formulations and specifications.
Analytical Testing Skills - Able to perform required tests according to the correct test method and ensure accuracy of results.
Instrument Handling & Troubleshooting - Familiar with laboratory analytical instruments and able to troubleshoot simple instrumentation issues.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance - Familiar with and comply with OSH requirements and the CLASS Regulation 2013.
