Since opening in 1998, The Tech Interactive has been an integral part of the San Francisco Bay area and is proud to serve families and young people through hands-on activities, experimental labs, and design challenge experiences.

The Lab Instructor will be primarily responsible for facilitating 60-minute, hands-on Design Challenges for visiting field trip classes in Grades 2–12 and Girl Scout badge programs. This non-exempt (hourly) Seasonal role reports to the Assistant Manager, Facilitated Experiences.

ThisSeasonal part time role has an expected start date of August 7, 2026 and end date ofJune 6th, 2026, to align with operational needs to serve our guests during the academic year. Expected hours are variable and will range from 18-25 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Teach hands-on science labs as scheduled through provided lesson plans. Topics range from physics and chemistry to engineering and design.
  • Facilitate other educational experiences to support outreach at local school sites or on the gallery floor.
  • Maintain and prepare science lab classrooms and materials for daily programs. This may include tasks such as: clean up, reset, and set up materials after each lab; establish and maintain overall organization and cleanliness of labs; restock supplies as needed; and maintain materials inventory.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development training and staff meetings, generally taking place outside normal lab shift hours.
  • Complete additional related tasks or duties as assigned by the supervisor/manager.

Requirements and Skills

  • At least 1 year of teaching experience or experience working with children in a traditional or non-traditional educational/classroom setting.
  • Experience in engaging with and communicating technical/scientific topics to diverse groups with varying levels of exposure to and knowledge of the subject.
  • Flexibility to adapt in a constantly changing environment and when working with a constantly changing audience. This could include adapting content, adjusting pace of programming, and making on-the-spot decisions as needed.
  • Pursuing or completed BA/BS in education, science, engineering or equivalent is desired.
  • Experience with hands-on, cooperative learning instruction highly desired.
  • Fluency in one or more languages common to the San Francisco Bay Area is a plus.

Working Conditions and Schedule:

  • This is an on-site and off-site role, reliable transportation recommended
  • Flexible availability Monday through Sunday. Other needed availability will vary based on The Tech’s operating schedule and off-site educational events.
  • Ability to travel to off-site events as scheduled.
  • Significant periods of standing and walking within a classroom or an assigned space. Walking around while interacting with guests is an essential part of this job.
  • Frequently move objects up to 25 lbs.
