Performs tasks relating to specimen procurement, processing, and resulting. Performs call center, reference lab and billing functions. Performs Medical Lab Assistant functions. Maintains detailed patient and laboratory records.
Essential Functions
Performs all essential functions as listed in the job description of a Medical Lab Assistant, including phlebotomy and capillary puncture procedures, sweat and other body fluid collection, LIS functions, and clerical support functions.
Manages laboratory phone calls through the call center. Answers questions/resolves problems or properly routes calls concerning specimen orders, collection, processing, testing and resulting. Provides assistance to patients, families and hospital staff. Handles requests for add-on testing and calls and documents critical values.
Processes specimens according to stated procedures including specimens for special handling, research and reference testing.
Performs initial resulting functions of tests from reference labs and external sources.
Performs billing functions for reference lab testing.
Performs and documents procedures such as quality control and instrument maintenance. Assists with Performance Improvement projects.
Instructs and orients new employees and students of phlebotomy and documents induction training.
Performs responsibilities of Lead as required and other duties as assigned.
Performs within acceptable laboratory guidelines for procedure turnaround time and productivity.
Requirements
High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) Required
1+ years laboratory experience Preferred
Advanced knowledge of phlebotomy, reagents, equipment and equipment maintenance preferred. Ability to perform certain identified routine procedures at an acceptable level.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when collecting, handling and processing patient specimens.
Analytical skills to resolve complex laboratory collection problems and answer questions.
Demonstrates a low rate of error related to Medical Lab Assistant Functions.
Demonstrates outstanding time and attendance.
Demonstrates excellent customer service skills with clients, including physicians and staff. Maintains a positive, patient and helpful demeanor on the phone. Uses professional language and correct grammar, speaking clearly and concisely when working with clients.
