PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Laboratory Assistant (LA) participates in competency and educational opportunities and all activities in the R&T department(s), including performing multiple services associated with assigned departmental duties, laboratory support and customer services. These duties are in the scope of complexity according to accrediting agencies.
By accomplishing these duties, the LA ensures that daily operations in the PQC laboratories meet and follow all established guidelines, provide excellence in service, and meet the needs of all PQC customers.
The LA exemplifies and champions Carter BloodCare (CBC) Core Values and Code of Conduct, and adheres to CBC policies and applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the LA is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned.
This position may require working varied shifts, extended hours, weekends, and/or overtime to support operational needs. Regular full-time attendance is required during normal working hours.

QualificationsEDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
EXPERIENCE
- General laboratory and/or blood center experience, preferred
- Customer service training and experience, preferred
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Working knowledge of laboratory policies, procedures, and applicable guidelines
- Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze situations, develop solutions, and provide clear guidance, including appropriate documentation of issues and resolutions
- Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external customers, conveying information clearly, accurately, and professionally
- Demonstrates strong customer service and interpersonal skills, building effective relationships and fostering open, respectful, and collaborative interactions
- Organizes, prioritizes, and manages workload effectively, with strong attention to detail and consistent follow-through
- Interprets, applies, and communicates verbal and written instructions, technical information, and guidelines accurately
- Utilizes laboratory mathematics and data analysis skills to compute, interpret, and report numerical data
- Exercises sound judgment and decision-making, recognizing priorities and taking appropriate action to support departmental operations and service quality
PHYSICAL/MENTAL STRESS FACTORS
- Stress associated with exposure to potential biohazard areas, materials, blood, body fluids, chemicals and cleaning solutions (OSHA Job Category I)
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to perform repetitive motion (e.g., typing, stripping of tubing, pipetting)
- Ability to detect varying degrees of hemolysis and distinguish the difference between colors and shades of colors
- Mental stress due to high customer service demands and working with strict deadlines; Ability to exchange and document accurate information and perform testing under these high-stress and emergent conditions
- Ability to multitask effectively to meet patient and inventory availability needs
- Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 40 pounds (with assistance, if needed)
- Ability to frequently move around the lab and between other departments at CBC
- Stress associated with working overtime and holidays, as needed
- Stress associated with an overnight stay in a location provided by CBC during inclement weather and/or disaster situations, as deemed necessary by the PQC management team
