GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Assistant receives samples in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), processes samples in Central Processing, prepares samples for testing performed in-house and those being transported to reference laboratories. The person will perform clerical duties of the department, training new employees, teaching phlebotomy students, and may perform up to moderate complexity testing. The Laboratory Assistant will serve as the backup to the department phlebotomists; therefore, additional duties may include performing blood collection in a safe, accurate, and professional manner in high-paced work areas. This position is also responsible for accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and sample labeling and must interact with customers in a pleasant, efficient, and cooperative manner.

HOURS

M-F 4am to 12:30pm

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Demonstrate competency of phlebotomy skills and techniques including venipuncture, heel sticks, blood cultures, pediatric specimens, and special collections such as those for blood banking on an annual basis.

Greet and identify all patients in a courteous and confidential manner.

Outpatients are responded to within 10 minutes of arrival to the laboratory.

Perform end of shift duties including, but not limited to, resolving collection pending list, sanitizing work area, and restocking collection trays.

Demonstrate behaviors of service excellence consistent with hospital-wide and department specific standards.

Demonstrate teamwork, cooperation, and respect to internal and external customers alike.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or equivalent.

One year of phlebotomy or related experience.
