Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The Lab Assistant supports the daily operations of the Fudge Laboratory. This position provides students with hands-on laboratory experience while supporting the health and safety of laboratory animals and the collection of accurate research data.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals.
  • Monitor and record water quality measurements.
  • Perform routine water changes and assist with maintaining aquarium systems.
  • Assist with feeding hagfish according to established schedules and procedures.
  • Clean tanks, equipment, and laboratory work areas.
  • Assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing research data.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Follow established laboratory safety, animal-care, and research protocols.
  • Notify the faculty supervisor of animal-care concerns, equipment issues, or unusual conditions.
  • Perform other related laboratory duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Little to no previous laboratory experience required.
  • Ability to learn and follow laboratory procedures, safety requirements, and animal-care protocols.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions carefully.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Dependability and ability to maintain a consistent work schedule.
  • Willingness to work with aquatic animals and perform routine tank-cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in biology, marine science, animal science, or a related field.
  • Previous coursework or experience in a laboratory, animal-care, or research environment.
  • Experience collecting, organizing, or analyzing data.

Special Instructions to Applicants

This position will begin immediately and last through May 23, 2027.

The number of hours for this position will not exceed 10 hours per week.
