The Laboratory Assistant, in the laboratory of Dr. Barbieri at the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple (ACT), provides technical and operational support for research focused on molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disease. The laboratory investigates how molecular chaperone systems regulate protein quality control and promote cellular resilience in disorders including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson’s disease.
Research in the laboratory utilizes yeast-based genetic models and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neuronal systems to study protein aggregation and proteostasis pathways relevant to disease.

The Laboratory Assistant will support routine laboratory operations, including inventory management, reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, and general laboratory organization. The individual will assist with molecular biology, biochemistry, yeast genetics, and mammalian cell culture experiments under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities include maintaining accurate laboratory records, assisting with data collection, preparing laboratory materials, coordinating supply orders, and contributing to a safe, organized, and productive research environment.

Required Education and Experience:
* At least one year of directly related laboratory experience required.

Preferred Education and Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field.

Required Skills and Abilities:
* Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and scientific procedures.
* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to maintain accurate records and follow written protocols.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Proficiency with standard computer software applications.

Essential Duties:
* Prepare reagents, solutions, media, and other materials needed for laboratory experiments.
* Assist with maintenance of yeast strains and cell culture systems used in research studies.
* Collect, organize, and record experimental data.
* Maintain laboratory inventories and assist with ordering supplies and equipment.
* Clean, organize, and maintain laboratory workspaces and equipment.
* Follow laboratory safety procedures and institutional policies.
* Assist with development and maintenance of laboratory standard operating procedures.
* Coordinate receipt and storage of laboratory shipments and supplies.
* Performs other duties as assigned
