Evening Shift
The Microbiology Assistant is inoculating specimen onto culture media, which grows bacteria and/or fungus for technical analysis. The Microbiology Assistant does data entry into the LIS for each of the specimens received. The staff also fields call from nursing units, doctor offices, and physicians in regard to Microbiology.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum
High School diploma or equivalent is required. A College level biology or microbiology courses required.
Preferred
Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology or a related science.
Preferred
Inoculation experience in educational or medical lab.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum: Computer skills, customer service skills, troubleshooting skills.
Physical/Mental (Enter activity and frequency – seldom, occasionally, frequently and constantly)
Position has exposure to infectious disease, hazardous chemicals, fumes and sharps. The position requires some walking, standing, bending, pushing and occasional lifting of objects weighing from 20 to 40 pounds. Concentration is required when processing specimens and data entry into the LIS system. Must be able to handle daily interruptions during processing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The conditions are fast paced with moderate to high stress. It is volume driven work and a high level of quality is necessary. It requires the ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize. The conditions require the ability to work as a team and independently within each shift of work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Able to perform culture inoculation with a variety of specimen types and other initial area procedures.
Able to operate basic equipment – i.e. centrifuges.
Able to prepare specimens for staining.
Must be able to do analytical functions as calculating, weighing and correlating of information.
Must understand and be able to use computer systems.
Must be able to multi-task under a volume-based work environment.
Must be able to organize and prioritize work to meet customer needs.
Must be a team player, able to flex out and help with completing work as soon as possible.
Must demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, to patients, clients, hospital and laboratory staff.
Must be able to demonstrate good customer service skills.
