LOCATION: 10 Risho Ave, East Providence, RI 02914

Hours: Per Diem, Monday to Friday & rotating weekends/holidays

Part Time: Benefits Not Eligible

Lab Aides play an important role in helping technologists/technicians perform laboratory tests. Laboratory aides prepare various specimens for testing. Aides must communicate effectively with staff in multiple departments. Aides must pay attention to detail and follow instructions. Once trained, Lab Aides are authorized to independently process specimens. In some departments, Lab Aides may perform limited waived and/or moderately complex tests under the direct supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technicians (see training checklists for more detailed information). Laboratory Aides are not authorized to release results.

In this role, you will:

  • Independently obtains, receives and prepares laboratory specimens for analysis. Reviews specimen acceptability. Assists in storage of specimens. Notifies Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician (MLS/MLT) of any problems with specimens received
  • Builds work lists of specimens received within the department. Loads specimens on analyzers to keep work flowing
  • May conduct quality control testing under the direct supervision of MLS/MLT. Reports any QC problem to MLS/MLT. Records and files data obtained.
  • Completes scheduled instrument maintenance according to established protocol
  • May perform limited laboratory tests and record results under the direct supervision of MLS/MLT (see training checklist for more detailed information). Notifies MLS/MLT when lab results are ready for review and release
  • Assists supervisor with inventory control. May be responsible for the storage and rotation of reagents
  • May assist supervisor in training department personnel
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

All you need is:

  • Requires a high school diploma
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and science background is desirable
  • Provide required documents as noted in ESCL Driving Policy if mobile/driving duties are assigned

Physical Demands

  • Extensive sitting, phone and computer use
  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours
  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch
  • May be required to lift, move and carry up to 15-20 pounds
  • Hearing acuity sufficient to effectively communicate with customers and Employees via telephone and in person
  • Ability to communicate verbally on phone and in person
  • Fluency in the English language
  • Extended hours may be required
