Job Description

Legal Aid Alberta is seeking to fill a Full-Time, Permanent Senior Compliance Auditor in our Edmonton office. This position will appeal to an individual that likes to take initiative, is client focused and is exceptionally strong in delivering high-quality results.

As a publicly funded, non-profit organization, Legal Aid Alberta provides affordable legal services in family law, domestic violence, child welfare, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defense. We are Alberta-wide, with 300 staff and 1,200 private practice lawyers helping people overcome their legal challenges in more than 75 communities across the province.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Certificate Standards and Compliance some of the key responsibilities include:
• Ensure compliance and consistency in the application of Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) Rules and Policies and perform compliance audits in accordance with international auditing standards.
• Conduct regular compliance audits of roster lawyer billing, i.e., random, and targeted post payment audits of lawyer contracts and associated billings to ensure compliance with LAA Tariff and other billing protocols and reduce the risk of billing errors.
• Examine, analyze, and interpret paid and unpaid roster lawyer invoices, gather additional supporting records, and ensure veracity and accuracy of roster lawyer invoicing.
• Identify billing trends and practices that are not compliant with organizational Policies, Rules and Procedures.
• Develop compliance auditing plans for complex matters.
• Identify areas of loss prevention and risk mitigation for the business,
• Track matters, plans and outcomes/ diarize and monitor for next steps.
• Compile summaries of the results of audits and present these summaries to other team members for action.
• Ensure that audits follow defined processes, are objectively conducted, are thorough in gathering all material facts and present an accurate accow1ting of the issues to support timely completion of compliance-related investigations.
• Evaluate facts, employ sotmd deductive reasoning to draw and support appropriate conclusions, and make recommendations.
• Prepare clear, concise, and factual summaries of audit results that enable fair and relevant decisions to be made.
• Collaborate with senior management and internal team to ensure audit findings are understood and appropriate action plans are implemented.
• Participate in working committees and/or other projects and initiatives as needed.
• Provide support to external auditors, consultants, or other assurance providers if required.
• Develop procedures, and guidelines for compliance reviews, including audit protocols.
• Stay on trend with industry best practices, emerging risks, and evolving best practices for audit and compliance.
• Participate in and contribute to efforts to improve the effectiveness of organizational standards and compliance-related processes and procedures.
• Maintain a strong understanding of the organization's objectives, operations, and industry trends to tailor audit approaches and priorities accordingly.
• Ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards, procedures, and internal control and timekeeping expectations.
• Attend educational and professional development programs to improve job knowledge and enhance the compliance department's reputation.
• Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
• A minimum of 6 years' accounting and/or auditing experience.
• CPA designation required.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of compliance audit, investigation, and internal controls.
• A high level of comfort working with technology and a keen enthusiasm for learning new systems,including computer literacy in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM), web-based legal research tools, and other web-based resources.
Skills:
• Identifying, obtaining, and analyzing information from a variety of sources, evaluating facts, identifying issues, ascertaining organizational objectives, considering alternative solutions, analyzing risk, and advising on the appropriate course of action.
• Ability to detect patterns in data.
• Strong attention to detail, analytical, and statistical skills.
• Compiling information and delivering clear, concise reports both verbal and written.

Annual Salary Range: $78,649 – $105,770
