College and Career Advisor

Annual Duty Days: 190 Days

Terms of Employment: 10 Months

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Scale: AFSCME UB2 Grade 16

Supports high school students in career and college readiness through advising, programming, and community partnerships. Coordinates work-based learning experiences, facilitates postsecondary planning, and assists with career development activities.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates college, technical school, and career exploration activities for grades 9–12.

  • Implements the career advisory program using Xello or similar platforms in partnership with CCPS, the Workforce Development Board (WDB), and the College of Southern Maryland (CSM).

  • Advises students individually and in groups on apprenticeships, postsecondary planning, and career pathways, including SAT, ACT, and Common App support.

  • Proctors CTE Interest Surveys and provides information about 10th-grade CTE programs.

  • Places and monitors students in internships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning programs.

  • Analyzes career platform data and student interest inventories to guide advisement.

  • Collaborates with school counselors, ELL, and SPED staff to support student planning.

  • Teaches skills such as time management, study habits, interview preparation, professional writing, and digital literacy.

  • Maintains student interaction through classroom sessions, office hours, and informal meetings.

  • Establishes business and community partnerships to expand career experiences.

  • Researches and assists with financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

  • Facilitates collection of college acceptance, military enlistment, and financial award data.

  • Coordinates and supports specialized programming for students not meeting CCR benchmarks.

  • Leads planning and facilitation of the Senior Portfolio Interview and Senior Awards Night.

  • Maintains accurate records of scholarship totals and postsecondary plans for graduation materials.

  • Prepares and submits reports to CCPS, CSM, and WDB.

  • Stays current with workforce and labor market trends to inform advising practices.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in human relations, social work, psychology, education, or a related field.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a related field preferred.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Valid Maryland Class C Driver’s License.

    • Ability to earn Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) certification within two years or other approved credential.

    • Availability for evening and weekend events related to financial aid and scholarships.

    • Proficiency in a language other than English preferred; Spanish desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of career counseling, apprenticeship programs, and community resources.

  • Skill in student advisement, program coordination, and data analysis.

  • Skill in Microsoft Office and platforms such as Xello.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.

  • Ability to build partnerships and support curriculum development related to college and career readiness.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift/move 10–50 pounds and perform light physical tasks.
  • Requires travel between school buildings and community locations.
  • Requires hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity for computer-based work.
  • Frequently required to sit, reach, speak, and hear in a standard office or school setting.
