Job Description

The Samuel H. Kress Program in Painting Conservation

The Kress Program in Paintings Conservation was established in 1989 to instill a sensitive aesthetic approach and perpetuate a time-tested pedagogical method for the next generation of Old Master painting conservators and to undertake the conservation treatment and long-term preservation of approximately one thousand paintings in the dispersed Kress Collection, principally located in eighteen museums and twenty-three study collections across the United States. The Fellowship is named for Mario Modestini, the longtime conservator and curator of the Kress Collection and one of the great painting restorers of the twentieth century.

The Kress–Mario Modestini Fellowship is meant to provide sustained practical experience to recent masters-level graduates of art conservation training programs who are interested in the treatment of Old Master paintings. Working with Conservation Center faculty and staff, the Fellow will participate in the Kress Program. Their primary duty will be to undertake the technical study, documentation, and conservation treatment of paintings from the dispersed Kress collection. They may also conduct and disseminate research on the paintings they treat, travel to survey Kress collections, and contribute to the activities of the program more generally.

This is a 12 month fixed-term position with an estimated start date of October 1, 2026. The annual rate of pay for this role is $58,656.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will hold an advanced degree from a recognized post-baccalaureate training program (MA/MS), either in the United States or abroad, and should have graduated within the last five years. The candidate would ideally be proficient in the study of paintings and paint samples using common techniques, including infrared reflectography, X-radiography, and cross-sections. Excellent English writing and computer skills are required.
