Job Description

Overview

An experienced, highly educated and academically accomplished Governess / Academic Tutor is sought to support the educational development, academic progress and extracurricular schedules of school-aged children within a busy, international private household. The family spends the academic year in Dorado, Puerto Rico, where the children attend a leading private school, and travels extensively during school holidays, typically spending considerable time in New York in the Summer, as well as other domestic and international locations. This is a newly created, hands-on educational oversight role for someone who can combine high-level academic tutoring with educational coordination, organization, and day-to-day support of the children's schedules.

The primary focus will be on the younger children, with some additional minimal oversight and support for the older children. The older children are academically independent. The family has exceptionally high academic expectations, and the successful candidate will be intellectually curious, academically rigorous, and confident in working with bright, capable children who benefit from being challenged.

The position will typically follow the schedule below:

  • Monday to Friday: 2:00/2:30 pm – 8:00 pm. • One weekend day: Approximately 6 hours per week.

Some flexibility will be required depending on school schedules, extracurricular commitments, and family travel. However, the family will do their best to maintain a consistent schedule and remain respectful of the time required to prepare academic materials and plan lessons. During the summer holidays, the schedule will adapt around the children's camps and travel, with an emphasis on maintaining academic progress and continuity of learning. Given the children's more varied summer schedule, there is likely to be additional downtime for the candidate during this period. The family travels regularly and would welcome a candidate who is comfortable accompanying them on selected domestic and international trips. Travel expectations and arrangements will be discussed and agreed upon on a case-by-case basis.

Educational Management and Coordination

  • Monitor academic performance, grades, assignments and progress across the children.• Maintain an organized overview of each child's academic commitments, assessments and extracurricular activities.• Liaise with teachers and school staff as appropriate.• Attend parent-teacher evenings alongside the parents, providing additional academic insight and support rather than acting as a substitute for parental involvement.• Identify opportunities for additional academic enrichment, specialist tuition and educational development.• Help coordinate supplementary online classes and external tutors.

  • Assist in managing the children's extracurricular schedules, including sports, golf, tennis, ceramics, and other activities.• Coordinate pick-ups and drop-offs, ensuring the children arrive at their commitments on time.• Organize playdates and help manage the children's social calendars.• Oversee the practical coordination of camps and holiday activities.• Work collaboratively with other household staff and family members to ensure the children's schedules run smoothly.• Provide a structured, organized, and supportive presence during afternoons and evenings.

Requirements

  • A genuinely intelligent, intellectually curious, and academically accomplished individual.• Someone who can confidently command the respect of bright, academically capable children
  • Exceptionally organized, proactive and detail-oriented.• Able to manage multiple children's academic requirements and schedules simultaneously.• Warm, engaging, and approachable, while maintaining appropriate boundaries and authority.• Confident working independently and taking ownership of the educational program.• Flexible and adaptable, particularly when traveling.• Comfortable working collaboratively with parents, teachers, tutors, and other household staff.• A hands-on approach is essential; this is not a remote-only oversight position.• A valid driver's license and confident driving ability would be advantageous.• Enhanced background checks and excellent references are required.• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally with the family
