Job Description
The Kitchen Supervisor is responsible for supervising daily kitchen operations while actively participating in food preparation, production, sanitation, and team support. This position ensures quality standards, food safety compliance, operational efficiency, and excellent service execution. The Kitchen Supervisor provides frontline leadership to kitchen staff and supports scheduling, training, inventory control, and maintaining established culinary standards.
This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operations & Food Production
- Supervise daily kitchen operations to ensure timely and efficient food preparation and service.
- Assist with cooking, plating, preparation, and execution during service periods.
- Monitor food quality, consistency, presentation, and portion standards.
- Ensure all recipes and production standards are followed.
- Coordinate workflow to maintain productivity and service expectations.
Team Leadership
- Provide day-to-day direction and support to kitchen team members.
- Assist with training, onboarding, and coaching employees.
- Monitor employee performance and reinforce operational expectations.
- Support employee engagement and teamwork across shifts.
- Communicate staffing needs and operational concerns to leadership.
- Assist in assigning daily work responsibilities.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health department, and workplace safety requirements.
- Conduct routine inspections of kitchen cleanliness and equipment condition.
- Enforce safe food handling practices and proper storage procedures.
- Ensure adherence to company policies and emergency procedures.
Inventory & Cost Control
- Assist with ordering and inventory management.
- Monitor food usage and support waste reduction initiatives.
- Maintain proper storage and rotation practices (FIFO).
- Report supply shortages and equipment concerns promptly.
Administrative Support
- Support scheduling and labor management efforts.
- Assist with timekeeping accuracy and attendance tracking.
- Complete required operational documentation and logs.
- Participate in department meetings and operational planning.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position provides direct day-to-day supervision of kitchen employees and assists leadership with:
- Work assignments
- Training and coaching
- Performance feedback
- Attendance monitoring
- Operational accountability
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Culinary training or hospitality coursework preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 2–3 years of kitchen or culinary experience required.
- Prior supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Experience in hotel, resort, restaurant, healthcare, or high-volume food service environments preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of kitchen operations and food preparation methods.
- Understanding of food safety and sanitation practices.
- Ability to lead teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize and adapt to changing business needs.
- Basic computer and scheduling system skills preferred.
