Job Description

Apex Technical School, a leading vocational training institution serving New York City since 1961, is seeking a Kitchen Steward to join our Culinary Arts program. This role is essential to maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen and café environment while supporting Chef Instructors and students. The Kitchen Steward helps ensure the highest standards of safety, sanitation, and workflow efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Wash and sanitize dishes, cookware, utensils, and all kitchen/café surfaces.
  • Stock and transport food, supplies, and instructional materials.
  • Remove garbage and recycling in compliance with health codes.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment, reporting malfunctions and coordinating vendor repairs.
  • Assist Chef Instructors with mise en place preparation for lessons.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory, rotate food products, and place orders as needed.
  • Complete opening/closing duties and handle laundry transport for kitchen linens.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • NYC Food Handler’s License required; ServSafe certification a plus.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related kitchen or stewarding experience.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong organizational skills, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a diverse environment.

Work Environment

  • Warm kitchen setting with frequent exposure to cleaning products/chemicals.
  • Requires extended standing, lifting, and manual tasks.
  • Fast-paced environment supporting instruction and training needs.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time, non-exempt position with an hourly rate from $19-21 an hour based on experience
