The postholder will be part of a busy team that caters for the requirements of the College. The kitchen provides a food and beverage service to all students, staff and visitors. The Kitchen Porter will be responsible for the daily cleaning of the kitchen and equipment and ensuring food deliveries are safely stored.

Key Responsibilities

  • To receive deliveries from suppliers – checking goods received are correct.
  • To correctly store goods received in a timely manner.
  • To carry out general cleaning of walls, floors and food preparation services.
  • To wash/clean kitchen equipment, utensils, working surfaces and floors.
  • To observe hygiene, health and safety regulations and good practice.
  • To work to a cleaning schedule to ensure all kitchen areas are cleaned regularly.
  • To assist the Plate Room when necessary.
  • To carry out other duties as necessary to assist the team and function of the kitchen.

General

  • The post holder will be required to be familiar with, and work in accordance with, all College’s policies and procedures.
  • To participate in training and development required by the College.
  • To be willing and prepared to undertake any other duties as directed by Head Chef or Sous Chef. The job description may be subject to review in consultation with the postholder.
  • To be vigilant and take responsibility for ensuring the Kitchen and College property and equipment is kept safe at all times.
  • To ensure all personal data relating to individuals is kept confidential in accordance with College policies and relevant data protection regulations.

Person Specification and Criteria

Essential Criteria

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills including an intermediate level of spoken English.
  • Reliable, hardworking and good timekeeping.
  • Capable of doing physical work which involves bending, lifting heavy deliveries, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to work without supervision and able to use initiative.
  • Methodical with good attention to detail.
  • Able to achieve high level of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Willing to work flexibly and assist colleagues when required.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in a similar environment.
  • Basic food hygiene.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety, HACCP and COSHH.

Appointment: This is a permanent full-time post and there will be an initial probationary period of six months. The appointment will be conditional on verification of the successful candidate’s ‘Right to Work’ checks in advance of employment commencing and subject to the receipt of satisfactory references and medical clearance through the University’s Occupational Health Services.

Salary: College Grade 2 salary scale, currently £28,546 per annum (£13.07 per hour).

Hours of Working: Full time 42 hours each week. Standard hours for the Kitchen are from 7am – 3pm and 11.30am – 8.30pm, with a paid 30 minutes taken for lunch, on a rota working 5 out of 7 days. A willingness and ability to adopt a flexible approach to working hours and duties is necessary.

  • Pension - Eligibility to Brasenose College's pension schemes. Dependent on role, this may be NEST, OSPS (Oxford Staff Pension Scheme) or USS (University Superannuation Scheme). The successful candidate will be entered into this scheme automatically on joining, but on-going membership of the scheme is optional.

Annual leave shall be taken at mutually convenient times agreed in advance with the Department Manager. The holiday year begins on 1 January and ends 31 December. For part years of service, the entitlement will be calculated as 1/12th of the annual entitlement for each completed month.
