Position Summary

Reporting to the Culinary Instructor, the Kitchen Manager supports day-to-day kitchen and food-service operations and daily meal service. This hands-on role combines food preparation and cooking with coordination of kitchen workflow, sanitation, inventory, meal service, delivery, and support kitchen/food-service staff. This position will also ensure consistent, safe, and high-quality meal preparation and kitchen operations in accordance with established menus, recipes, organizational procedures, and applicable food-service, health, sanitation, and safety requirements.

Scope of Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook food for daily meal service in accordance with established menus, recipes, quality standards, and applicable food-service, health, and safety requirements.
  • Coordinate daily food preparation activities to ensure meals are prepared accurately, safely, and on schedule.
  • Receive, handle, label, date, rotate, and store perishable and non-perishable food items in accordance with established procedures and food-safety requirements.
  • Monitor food, kitchen supplies, and other materials and communicate replenishment needs to management in a timely manner.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, food-storage, preparation, serving, and dining areas.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, cookware, preparation surfaces, and other food-service items used in meal preparation and service.
  • Follow proper food-handling, temperature-control, sanitation, storage, and cross-contamination prevention procedures.
  • Assist with meal service and ensure food is appropriately portioned, presented, and maintained at safe temperatures.
  • Coordinate the safe and timely delivery of prepared meals and food supplies to designated locations, including proper packaging, securing, handling, and temperature control during transportation.
  • Follow established procedures for food waste, disposal, recycling, end-of-service cleanup, and required kitchen, sanitation, temperature, inventory, and food-service recordkeeping.
  • Support kitchen/food-service staff to ensure food preparation, sanitation, delivery, and service responsibilities are completed appropriately.
  • Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local food-service, health, sanitation, and workplace-safety requirements.
  • Perform other duties related to kitchen and food-service operations as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; culinary, hospitality, or food-service training preferred.
  • Three or more years of experience in a commercial, institutional, or high-volume kitchen or food-service environment preferred.
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience in a kitchen or food-service setting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, safe food handling, storage, temperature control, and kitchen safety practices.
  • Food Protection Manager, ServSafe Manager, or comparable food-safety certification preferred; The ability to obtain required certification based on site or program requirements.
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills with the ability to coordinate multiple meal-service priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of commercial kitchen work, including prolonged standing and lifting or moving food, equipment, and supplies.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally when meal delivery is part of the assignment.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays as required by meal-service and program needs.
