POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

  • This role is responsible for serving and maintaining the dining room, maintai​ning cleanliness and hygiene standards, and providing general support to the kitchen operations. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.

This is a Temporary Fixed-Term Contract at 24 hours/week with an end date of June 1, 2026. Renewal is possible. Schedule is Sundays - Wednesdays, 7:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:


Incumbents may perform all, some, or similar range of duties as below.

Food Service Preparation

  • Set up breakfast daily, including preparing 2 pans of bread.
  • Maintain cereal supplies by keeping 2 bins each of 3 cereal varieties stocked.
  • Ensure condiments are always available,
  • Check the coffee machine every morning and maintain 2 coffee bags in the fridge.
  • Assist in preparing simple meals and beverages when required.
  • Set up the dining room and serve meals as needed.

Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Clean and wipe all counters, tables, and surfaces after breakfast and lunch.
  • Mop floors in the kitchen, dining room, stockroom, kitchen washroom, walk‑in fridge, and other assigned areas.
  • Wash breakfast and lunch dishes, including pots, pans, utensils, and food preparation equipment.
  • Clean assigned kitchen areas daily, including windows, baseboards, walls, stoves, fryers, ovens, equipment, and storage areas.
  • Maintain dining room tables and chairs in a clean and tidy condition at all times.
  • Clean and wipe the slatwall frame regularly.
  • Wash and clean the soup van Cambro once a week.
  • Mop the dry storage area weekly.
  • Uphold the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness in all tasks.

Waste & Supply Management

  • Change and dispose of garbage after breakfast and lunch.
  • Restock washroom supplies and cleaning materials daily.
  • Ensure oatmeal, sugar, and other dry goods bins remain fully stocked.
  • Keep storage areas and the fridge organized and tidy.

Operational Support

  • Apply proper lifting and carrying techniques to prevent injury.
  • Operate all kitchen equipment safely and responsibly, following proper usage guidelines.
  • Assist with bread donation activities when needed.
  • Complete all assigned daily routine tasks.
  • Follow safe food handling procedures to prevent cross‑contamination and foodborne illnesses.
  • Represent The Salvation Army in a respectful and professional manner, reflecting its mission and values.
  • Perform other work‑related duties as assigned.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, dining room staff, kitchen staff, volunteers.
External: Clients, vendors, community members.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to the Food Services Manager.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Assist with receiving and stocking food and kitchen supply orders.
  • Safe usage and maintenance of food service facilities and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work duties are mostly performed indoors.
  • The role required bending, kneeling, or stooping when required to lift items such as loads of dishes, kitchen tools, machinery, and food preparation equipment.
  • Long periods of standing on hard surfaces are required; carrying/lifting/moving up to 30 lbs; unpacking delivery vehicles.
  • The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Some high school completion.
• Standard First Aid, CPR and AED or willingness to obtain.


Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

• Up to 1 year of related experience.

• An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Skills and Capabilities:
• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Good oral communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and adapt to changing circumstances.
• Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
• Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.22 to $18.22 with a maximum of $18.22.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
