Job Description

KINDERGARTEN TEACHER

Location: Atherton Elementary School
Reports To: Building Principal

Start Date: 2026-2027 School Year

The kindergarten teacher is responsible for providing a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that supports the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of young learners. The teacher plans and delivers instruction aligned with Michigan Academic Standards, assesses student progress, collaborates with families and staff, and implements effective classroom management practices. The position requires fostering positive relationships, supporting diverse learning needs, and maintaining compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate instruction aligned with the Michigan K�12 Standards and district curriculum.
  • Create and maintain a safe, positive, and engaging classroom environment that promotes student learning and social-emotional development.
  • Assess student progress using a variety of formative and summative measures and use data to inform instruction.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and developmental needs of students.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies that foster positive behavior and student engagement.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and families to support student success.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and school activities.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) processes as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate student records and complete required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development activities, and other district-required functions.
  • Comply with all district policies and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate elementary education endorsement(s) required by the Michigan Department of Education. Early childhood education coursework or endorsement, preferred
  • Highly qualified to teach at the elementary level in accordance with state and federal requirements.
  • Experience with MTSS, PBIS, and differentiated instruction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development, early literacy, numeracy, and effective instructional practices for young learners.
  • Knowledge of the Michigan K�12 Standards, assessment practices, and curriculum development.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Successful completion of all required criminal history and background checks.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

SALARY: Per Atherton Education Association contract
