We’re Hiring: Kennel Assistant

📍 Location: Rushden, NN10
💰 Pay: £12.71 per hour
📅 Hours: Full-time – 40 hours per week – 4 days on out of 7 days - This position is for 12 months only and is covering maternity leave.

Are you passionate about animal welfare and looking for a rewarding, hands‑on role? We’re looking for enthusiastic, reliable, and animal‑loving individuals to join our supportive team at Chalkwell Kennels as a Kennel Assistant

A Kennel Assistant is an active, practical role where no two days are the same. You’ll play a vital part in ensuring our dogs and cats receive exceptional care, attention, and enrichment in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.

The Kennel Assistant role is physically demanding and not always glamorous, expect muddy paws, pet hair, and plenty of cleaning. You’ll be kneeling, lifting and on your feet throughout the day. However, for those who truly love working with animals, the rewards of building trust and bonds make it incredibly fulfilling.

Responsibilities

As a Kennel Assistant, you’ll be fully involved in the day‑to‑day care of animals, including:

• Confidently handling dogs and cats of all sizes and breeds
• Cleaning kennels, cattery units, and play areas to our high standards
• Feeding, grooming, and providing daily enrichment
• Exercising animals and providing one‑to‑one interaction – from playful activities to reassuring cuddles
• Supporting the wellbeing, comfort, and welfare of all animals in our care

Qualifications

What we’re looking for:

• Previous experience working with animals (essential)
• A genuine passion for animal welfare and high standards of care
• A hardworking , reliable, and team‑focused approach
• Confidence and competence handling dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes
• Strong communication skills, engaging professionally with customers and colleagues
• The ability to follow standard operating procedures consistently
• A professional, presentable appearance – clean, smart, and tidy
• A polite, approachable, customer‑focused manner
• Commitment to learning and personal development
• The right to work in the UK with a 5-year checkable history
• A UK driving license with own transport, or the ability to reliably reach site within 45 minutes

Desirable Criteria:

• Previous experience in an animal welfare setting
• Canine and /or feline first aid certification
• Relevant qualifications or further education in animal care
