Overview

First-time parents in Long Island City, Queens are seeking an experienced Newborn Care Specialist to provide overnight support following the arrival of their first baby, due March 27, 2027. The initial contract will be for six weeks beginning at the baby's birth, with the possibility of extending week by week for up to 10–12 weeks.

The family is seeking overnight coverage five nights per week, Sunday through Thursday, from 10:00 pm – 6:00 am. They are ideally looking for an 8-hour shift but are open to discussing a 10-hour overnight schedule for the right candidate.

The NCS will take primary responsibility for the baby's overnight care, including bottle feeding, diaper changes, burping, settling, and maintaining a safe sleep environment. The family plans to bottle feed overnight. The NCS may rest while the baby sleeps but will be responsible for monitoring the baby throughout the shift. The baby will be in the nursery, so the NCS will have a bed and bathroom access.

The parents would like to establish a consistent routine once developmentally appropriate, with a focus during the early weeks on day/night differentiation, a consistent bedtime routine, and gradually encouraging longer nighttime stretches. They do not plan to begin formal sleep training before 4 months.

This is a warm and casual household, and the ideal candidate will be calm, highly experienced, and a direct communicator who is comfortable supporting and coaching first-time parents without taking over. The family values someone who can confidently provide guidance while remaining respectful of their preferences and parenting decisions. The family lives on the 68th floor, so the NCS must be comfortable with heights.

Responsibilities

• Provide attentive overnight newborn care
• Bottle feed baby throughout the night
• Diaper, burp, soothe, and settle baby
• Monitor baby and maintain safe sleep practices
• Wash and sterilize bottles and pump parts
• Prepare bottles for the following day
• Complete baby's laundry
• Maintain a detailed feeding, diaper, and sleep log
• Monitor inventory of diapers, wipes, formula, and other newborn essentials
• Help establish developmentally appropriate newborn routines
• Support day/night differentiation and consistent bedtime habits
• Communicate clearly with parents during evening and morning handoffs
• Maintain a quiet and calm environment overnight
• Keep baby's overnight areas and supplies clean and organized

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience as a professional newborn and overnight care experience
• Confident independently managing newborns overnight
• Experience supporting first-time parents
• Strong knowledge of newborn feeding, soothing, sleep, and safe-sleep practices
• Calm, experienced, and reassuring demeanor
• Direct and proactive communicator
• Comfortable offering guidance without overriding parents' preferences
• Highly reliable and dependable
• NCS certification preferred
• Lactation support training is a plus
• Doula experience is a plus but not required

Requirements

• Infant CPR & First Aid certification
• Safe-sleep training
• Up-to-date Tdap, flu, and COVID vaccinations
• Fluent English
• Comfortable working in a home with a friendly dog and cat; no pet care required
• Able to hold availability surrounding the baby's due date, ideally up to two weeks after March 27
• Open to potentially extending the initial contract up to 10–12 weeks
• Non smoking

Salary and Benefits

• $45/hr for 8-hour overnight shifts
• Sunday–Thursday, 10:00pm–6:00am
• Family is open to discussing a 10-hour shift if required by the candidate
• Initial 6-week contract with potential week-by-week extension
• No travel anticipated during the initial 6-week contract
• Potential opportunity for 1–2 weeks of additional overnight support in Chicago when the family relocates in late June 2027; availability for this portion is preferred but not required
