Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting for motivated and reliable Kaiāwhina Matahuhua - Academic Inclusion Assistants to join Te Amaru - Disability Services team on a casual basis for the 2027 academic year.
Working alongside students and Te Amaru - Disability Services staff, Kaiāwhina Matahuhua - Academic Inclusion Assistants play an important role in supporting disabled students to participate fully in university life and demonstrate their academic ability by providing practical support that promotes equitable access to learning and assessment.
Work may include accessible assessment support, note-taking, academic assistance, and other disability related academic support activities across the Kelburn, Pipitea and Te Aro campuses. Working as an Kaiāwhina Matahuhua - Academic Inclusion Assistant is a meaningful opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of disabled students while gaining valuable professional experience.

Key responsibilities
- Assist students during tests and examinations by reading assessment materials, typing or recording dictated responses, providing approved assessment support, and helping ensure academic integrity requirements are upheld.
- Produce clear, accurate and comprehensive lecture or tutorial notes and upload them securely for student access.
- Support students with academic tasks such as accessing course materials, laboratory participation, research activities, or locating study resources, within approved support arrangements.
- Work closely with students, academic staff, Academic Inclusion Coordinator, Senior Academic Inclusion Assistant, and fellow Academic Inclusion Assistants to provide high quality, student-centred support.
- Contribute to a safe, respectful and inclusive environment by maintaining professional boundaries, confidentiality and responding appropriately to wellbeing concerns.
Ō pūmanawa - About you
You will have:
- Either a completed undergraduate qualification or be currently studying towards a tertiary qualification with a B grade average or above.
- Excellent typing skills, with a typing speed of at least 70 words per minute.
- Strong listening skills and the ability to accurately capture information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism and appropriate boundaries.
- A calm and professional approach in sometimes challenging situations.
- Experience using Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office applications.
- Confidence with learning and troubleshooting minor technology issues.
- A laptop and reliable internet connection.
- The ability to work across Kelburn, Pipitea and Te Aro campuses as required.
- A commitment to equity, inclusion, accessibility and positive student outcomes.
- Commitment to the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in an educational context.
