Learning is a part of everything that we do, not just what happens in the classroom. It is how we teach and learn, which is truly a way of living, thinking, and interacting with the world. To learn more, please visit us at www.lascuolasf.org.

Number of students: 465

Locations: San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Milano, Italy

La Scuola International School is an independent non-profit school accredited by NAIS, CAIS, WASC and CIS and is one of two Italian schools recognized by the Italian government in the United States.

La Scuola’s math program commits to providing students with a creative and positive experience that fosters a sense of joy and confidence about the subject of mathematics. Our math program values mathematical reasoning, exploring multiple strategies to model and solve authentic problems, investigating both real-world and computational mathematical contexts, and is often hands-on and integrated across disciplines.

La Scuola seeks a dynamic math specialist who is passionate about exploring mathematics with elementary and middle school students, excited by the opportunity to inspire all learners through innovation, and knowledgeable about cutting edge mathematics pedagogy and technology integration.

The math specialist will work with small groups of elementary and middle school children to support and enhance their math skills and conceptual understandings, collaborating with the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Elementary & Middle School Division Heads, K-8 Learning Specialists and Teachers to ensure student learning and academic success.

This part time position (50%) reports dually to both the Director of Student Support & Counseling and Division Head.

  • Teach small-group and, as needed, whole-class math instruction in mixed-age and mixed-ability classes across grades K–8.
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate mathematics into interdisciplinary, theme-based units.
  • Design learning experiences that are hands-on, problem-based, and reflective of current best practices in mathematics pedagogy.
  • Support teachers in identifying resources and strategies for inquiry based mathematical learning. Deliver model lessons, observe teachers, and meet to provide feedback and collaborate on developing ideas.
  • Use technology thoughtfully to enhance conceptual understanding and engagement.

Student Support & Intervention

  • In collaboration with teachers, support and conduct the implementation of diagnostic and benchmark assessments to identify student strengths and barriers to learning.
  • Design and implement research-based math interventions based on assessment results for individuals and small groups.
  • Differentiate instruction, learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment based on assessment data to support a range of learners,
  • Monitor student progress and support teachers by communicating growth through written narratives and conferences.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Partner with classroom teachers, learning specialists, and administrators to ensure coordinated student support.
  • Participate in student support meetings, weekly faculty meetings, and other meetings as needed, including professional learning activities.
  • Support semester math narratives and participate in parent-teacher conferences as needed.
  • Present at Back-to-School Night and other community events.
  • Serve as an advisor/mentor for PYP Exhibition or Middle School advisory, as appropriate.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required in mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, or a related field; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of elementary math teaching, preferably in an independent or IB school setting.
  • Experience designing and implementing inquiry-based, constructivist, or project-based mathematics curriculum.
  • Strong understanding of mathematics pedagogy, assessment practices, and differentiation strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to support diverse learners in mixed-age and mixed-ability settings.
  • Well-versed in educational technology and current trends in mathematics education.
  • Passionate about sharing mathematics with students and colleagues.

Desired Competencies

  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and whole-child development.
